Antibacterial activity of stem bark extract of traditionally used Terminalia bellirica (Gaerth.) Roxb.

Medicinal Plants have been practised for hundreds of centuries by tribes all over the world. From the earliest times until the end of nineteenth century plants are still the common source of medicinal treatment yet. Using natural, plant-derived medicines that are “healthier” than prescription drugs derived from synthesized products is something that appeals to consumers. In this study, the plant Terminalia bellirica was taken for study due to the mesmerizing medicinal properties of the plant. The antibacterial activities of acetone, ethyl acetate, benzene and methanol extracts of Terminalia bellirica stem bark were tested for four pathogenic bacterial strains by agar disc diffusion method. Among the various extract, acetone extracts showed good antibacterial activity and maximum zone of inhibition was obtained for Staphylococus aureus (zone size 8mm) followed by Pseudomonas aurogenosa (10mm). The results are given in Table-1. Methanol extract showed antibacterial activity against E. coli (zone size 8mm). On the other hand ethyl acetate and benzene extract was found to be totally unaffected against these bacterial strains.

Phytochemical Screening and Antimicrobial Activity of Stem Bark Extracts of Schinus molle linens

The majority of the world population prepares medicines from plants to cure diseases. Schinus molle linens is a multipurpose plant that has been used for various remedies as constituents of traditional medicine. The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical constituents and antimicrobial activity of methanol extract and solvent fraction extracts of the stem bark of Schinus molle. Powder of Schinus molle was extracted with methanol by using the maceration method and the fractions were obtained by successive fractionation of the methanol extract with n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol. Preliminary phytochemical analysis of the crude methanol extract revealed the presence of flavonoids, terpenes, anthraquinones, alkaloids, tannins, phenols, and saponins. In addition to this, the antimicrobial activity of crude and solvent fraction extract was tested against S. aureus, E. faecalis, E. coli, and C. albicans at a concentration of 90.0, 180.0, and 900.0 μg/ mL. The crude methanol extract and chloroform fraction exhibited greater activity against gram-positive, gram-negative bacteria and fungi. The n-hexane and n-butanol fractions showed the least activity against most test bacteria and fungi. The study showed that it is possible to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi at different concentrations.

In vivo antiplasmodial activities of stem bark extracts of Avicennia marina in Plasmodium berghei-infected mice

malaria remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in developing tropical and subtropical nations. Due to the emergence and spread of drug resistance to currently available drugs, there is a need for the search of novel, safe, and reasonably affordable anti-malarial medications. The objective of this study was to assess the in vivoanti-malarial effectiveness of Avicennia marina stem bark extracts in a mice model. guidelines 425 of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development were used to determine the extracts' acute toxicity. Mice infected with chloroquine-sensitive Plasmodium berghei (ANKA strain) were tested for in vivoanti-plasmodial activity, and by giving oral doses of 100 mg/kg, 250 mg/kg, and 500 mg/kg body weight of extracts, the plant's suppressive, curative, and preventive effects were assessed. mice treated with dosages of up to 5000 mg/kg showed no evidence of acute toxicity or mortality. Consequently, it was determined that the acute lethal dosage of Avicennia marina extracts in swiss albino mice was greater than 5000 mg/kg. All doses of the extracts exhibited significant (p<0.05) dose-dependent suppression of P. berghei in the suppressive tests compared to the control group. At the highest dose (500 mg/kg), Methanolic crude extracts exerted the highest (93%) parasitemia suppression during the 4-day suppressive test. The extracts also displayed significant (p<0.001) prophylactic and curative activities at all doses compared to the control. results from this study ascertained the safety and promising curative, prophylactic and suppressive anti-plasmodial capabilities of the stem bark extracts of Avicennia marina in mice model.

Phytochemical and antibacterial activity of stem bark extract of Cordia africana Lam.

Traditional African medicine treats microbiological infections with Cordia africana. The maceration method was used to extract powder samples in stages using hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol. The presence of carbohydrates, anthraquinones, phenols, proteins, amino acids, saponins, tannins, flavonoids, alkaloids and triterpenoids/steroids were tested in the extracts by conventional phytochemical screening. The study provides evidence-based support for the use of Cordia africana by healers in the treatment of microbial diseases and has the potential to be used in medicine.

An Evaluation of the Antibacterial Activity of Pterocarpus tinctorius Bark Extract against Enteric Bacteria That Cause Gastroenteritis.

Enteric bacteria are the leading cause of bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide, particularly in low-income countries. The bark decoction of Pterocarpus tinctorius (Fabaceae) has traditionally been used to treat bacterial gastroenteritis. However, studies reporting the antibacterial activity of Pterocarpus tinctorius are rare. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of stem bark extract of Pterocarpus tinctorius against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, and Shigella dysenteriae. The powdered bark extract was successively extracted with methanol using the cold continuous maceration method, followed by partitioning the crude methanolic extract to obtain methanolic, hexane, and chloroform subextracts. Three fractions were isolated from the methanolic subextract using ordinary normal phase column chromatography. The antibacterial activity of the extracts and fractions was performed using the agar well diffusion method. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined using the agar well diffusion method. While, minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was obtained by the subculturing method. The methanolic subextract was the only extract that showed antibacterial activity against the tested bacteria, and its activity was highest on Shigella dysenteriae followed by Salmonella typhi and was least active on Escherichia coli, with mean inhibition zones of 14.3 ± 0.2, 13.7 ± 0.3, and 12.2 ± 0.1 at 200 mg/mL, respectively. Chloroform subextract showed antibacterial activity only on Shigella dysenteriae, while hexane subextract did not show antibacterial activity against all bacteria tested at 100 mg/mL and 200 mg/mL. Among the three subfractions of methanolic subextract, only one subfraction was active and had both mean minimum inhibitory concentration and a minimum bactericidal concentration against Escherichia coli at 1.25 mg/mL, Salmonella typhi at 1.25 mg/mL, and Shigella dysenteriae at 0.6 mg/mL. The findings of this study support the use of Pterocarpus tinctorius in traditional medicine. Therefore, purification and structural elucidation studies are highly recommended.

Oroxylum indicum stem bark extract exerts antitumor potential against Ehrlich’s ascites carcinoma in Swiss albino mice

Introduction and Aim: Constant efforts are exerted to explore unique bioactive principles from natural sources that possess more effective and specific antineoplastic activities. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the antitumor activity of stem bark extract of Oroxylum indicum in mice bearing Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC). Materials and Methods: Ninety female Swiss albino mice were categorized into fifteen groups (n=6). The animals were inoculated with 1x106 EAC cells. Tumor control animals received sterile water once daily for 10 consecutive days. Positive control group was injected with Cisplatin (CP) (one dose – 3.5 mg/kg body weight). The treatment groups were administered with O. indicum (OI) stem bark ethanol extract once daily with 50mg/kg, 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg body weight for eleven consecutive days. The blood parameters and serum hepatic enzymes activity was determined. The percentage increase in weight, the median survival time, the increase in median life span was calculated. The cytotoxic effect of CP and OI extract was determined. Results: There was significant reduction in the white blood cells count in OI and CP treatment group compared to increased level in EAC control group. The RBC count and Hemoglobin level which was significantly decreased (p&lt;0.05) in the tumour mice, was enhanced in the drug treatment groups. The EAC control group showed significant increase in tumour cell count (p&lt;0.05) whereas, treatment of EAC tumor bearing mice with OI and CP significantly increased the non-viable tumor cell count (p&lt;0.05). Conclusion: OI stem bark ethanol extract reduced the toxic implications of Ehrlich ascites carcinoma, reverted the haematological and biochemical changes induced by tumour. These results call for additional research on isolating and identifying the responsible bioactive elements in order to clarify the underlying processes of the anticancer impact.

A Study on Anti-inflammatory Activity of Stem Bark Extract of Holoptelea integrifolia

Background: Holoptelea integrifolia has been used for a long time in traditional medicine to cure inflammatory pain. The goal of the current research was to consider the anti-inflammatory activity and phytochemicals study of both the extracts of the stem bark of Holoptelea integrifolia. Methods: Anti-inflammatory potential was figure out in Carrageenan and Histamine models at 200 mg/kg doses. Apart from this, we have evaluated parameters like paw edema body weight, locomotor activity, hematological, biochemical assessment, etc. Results: Qualitative chemical test investigation of both the extracts of H. integrifolia stem bark acknowledge the presence of proteins, amino acids, alkaloids, glycosides, tannins, and flavenoids. The 200 mg/kg, p.o dose of the extract showed remarked (P &lt; 0.05) dose-dependent inhibition of edema formation. Both the ethanolic extract (200 mg/ kg, b. w) and aqueous extract (200 mg/ kg, b. w) of H. integrifolia stem bark showed remarked anti-inflammatory properties in comparison to reference drug Ibuprofen. In the Carrageenan model, the ethanolic extract has good anti-inflammatory activity than the aqueous extract. So, the ethanolic extract of stem bark of H. integrifolia is used to combat inflammation alone or with other conventional anti-inflammatory agents to treat different inflammatory disorders. Conclusion: Taken together, these results support the traditional use of Holoptelea integrifolia as a potent anti-inflammatory agent that may be proposed for the treatment of inflammatory pain.

In vivo analgesic and healing activities of stem bark extracts of Gardenia ternifolia Schumach. &amp; Thonn

In Ivory Coast, medicinal plants have always been used traditionally to promote wounds repairs. They have great potential for wound healing by promoting the speed of wound healing with less pain, discomfort and patient healing. The plant Gardenia ternifolia belongs to the family Rubiaceae. The macerated stem bark or the paste obtained is also used against bites snake, sexual impotence, hemorrhoids, healing wound, injury, and tooth decay. Gardenia ternifolia was extracted in aqueous and ethanol to evaluate acetic acid-induced writhing test to detect the peripheral analgesic activity of the extracts in mice. AEGT and EEGT showed reduced number of writhes which are significant compared to control (Acetaminophen). The results obtained support the use of Gardenia ternifolia in painful conditions acting peripherally. The healing activity of Gardenia ternifolia was also evaluated in the second part of the research. AEGT_50% and EEGT_50% ointments treated group showed a significant reduction in the wound breaking strength in incision type of wound model and significant increase in epithelization period and reduction in percentage of wound area in excision type of wound model as compared to control group treated with simple ointment.

Phytochemical Investigation and Analgesic Activity of Stem Bark Extract of Sapindus trifoliatus Linn

Aims: The study is designed to isolate and charecterize the phytoconstituents, and screen for the analgesic activity of stem bark extracts of Sapindus trifoliatus Linn.&#x0D; Methodology: The cleaned, dried and powdered stem barks of Sapindus trifoliatus were subjected to extraction by maceration process. The concentrated ethanolic extract of stem bark on was further subjected to preliminary phytochemical studies. The fractionated extracts were then packed into column chromatography for the isolation of phytoconstituents and they were characterized by IR, 1HNMR, 13CNMR and mass spectroscopy.Acute toxicity was performed to establish the lethal dose of the extract and In vivo analgesic activity was performed by tail flick and acetic acid induced writhing methods in experimental animals.&#x0D; Results: Preliminary phytochemical studies showed the presence of steroids, terpenoids, flavonoids, saponins and carbohydrates. Isolation of extracts led to give compounds like saponin glycoside, a steroid and triterpenoids. The extract was found to be safe up to 2000 mg kg bodyweight. Analgesic activity was found significant at level P = 05 when compared with control by tail flick and acetic acid induced writhing models in experimental animals.&#x0D; Conclusion: From ethanolic extract isolated a saponin glycoside,from petroleum ether stigmasterol and triterpenoids ursolic acid. The presence of saponin glycoside, triterpenoids, steroids might be responsible for the analgesic activity of the stem bark extract of Sapindus trifoliatus Linn.

In silico Evaluation of Phytocompounds of Neolamarckia cadamba (Roxb.) Stem Bark for Anticancer Activity

Objectives: Molecular docking studies are efficient tools to study the biopharmaceutical and pharmacokinetic parameters of drug compounds. The present study aimed to determine the in-vitro cytotoxic activity of stem bark extract of Neolamarckia cadamba (Roxb.) and to evaluate specific anticancer potential of selected phytocompounds of the bark using in silico molecular docking study. Materials and Methods: MTT assay was performed on MCF7, A549 and HepG2 cell lines. TLC screening conducted on all extracts and 80% hydro alcoholic extract subjected to fractionation using column chromatography. Selected fractions were analysed by GC-MS. Few of the compounds reported in GC-MS were docked on anticancer target proteins using autodockvina. Results: The IC50 values of the extract were found as 149.7μg/ml, 51.5μg/ml and 60.9μg/ml respectively. TLC in solvent system containing toluene, ethyl acetate and diethyl amine (7:2:1) revealed 12 spots when sprayed with vanillin sulphuric acid and 6 spots in solvent system containing methanol and chloroform (1.5:8.5). 20 fractions were collected from column chromatography technique. GC-MS chromatogram of fraction-3 shown 8 compounds and that of fraction-4 resulted in 19 compounds respectively. Binding energies and interactions of docked compounds are comparable to those of standards selected. Conclusion: Neolamarckia cadamba stem bark extract had shown excellent cytotoxic activity and the docked compounds also revealed the same indicating remarkable anticancer potential of the extract.

Comparative Study of Phytochemical, Antioxidant, and Cytotoxic Activities and Phenolic Content of Syzygium aqueum (Burm. f. Alston f.) Extracts Growing in West Sumatera Indonesia.

Syzygium aqueum, consisting of various fruit colors, is one of the plants that have been used as traditional medicine. This study aims to evaluate and compare phytochemical, antioxidant, and cytotoxic activities and total phenolic content of leaves and stem bark extracts of S. aqueum with pink and red fruits, in order to identify the best extract that can be used as a natural antioxidant. Phytochemical constituents were evaluated qualitatively using chemicals, while cytotoxic activities were identified using the brine shrimp lethality test. Total phenolic content was determined via the Folin–Ciocalteu method. Leaves and stem bark of S. aqueum contained flavonoids, phenolics, and triterpenoids, but the stem bark also contained saponins and alkaloids. Methanol and ethyl acetate extracts of leaves and stem bark were categorized as very powerful antioxidants to DPPH (IC50 9.71–38.69 μg/mL) and hydrogen peroxide (IC50 16.44–44.02 μg/mL), while hexane extracts were inactive. Methanol, ethyl acetate, and hexane extracts of leaves and stem bark were categorized as moderately cytotoxic to A. salina larvae (LC50 104.04–440.65 μg/mL). Comparing leaves and stem barks, antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of stem bark extracts were higher than those of leaves extracts. Total phenolic content of leaves extracts was higher than that of stem bark extracts where the order of total phenolic content progressed from methanol extracts > ethyl acetate extracts > hexane extracts. Therefore, the stem bark of S. aqueum was identified as the better source of natural antioxidant compared with the leaves.

Pharmacological investigation of Thespesea populnea bark extract for analgesic activity

Background: Pain is an unpleasant and distressing common problem with profound impact on individuals and society. Existing treatment modalities used for pain management are either less effective or exhibits several side effects. The aim of current study is to investigate the analgesic activity of stem bark extract of Thespesea populnea for pain management.Methods: Thirty Swiss albino were divided into five groups including control, standard and three tests groups (different doses of Thespesea populnea bark extract). Groups were investigated for analgesic activity using hot plate induced paw withdrawal, acetic acid induced writhing and formalin induced paw licking models.Results: Findings of hot plate model revealed that, percent increase in reflex latency of paw licking response in mice for test drug (10 mg/kg), attained peak effect of 136% at 180 minutes, whereas for standard pentazocine peak effect of 125% was attained at 180 minutes. In acetic acid model, the maximum percent inhibition in number of writhings for the test drug (30 mg/kg) was 68% and for standard diclofenac, it was 80%. In formalin model, percent inhibition in licking response in early and late phases for test drug (30 mg/kg) were 81% and 91% and for standard diclofenac it was 56% and 94% respectively. It was thus depicted that analgesic activity of test drug was significantly more than the standard in early phase and equivalent to standard in late phase.Conclusions: It was concluded that Thespesea populnea bark extract at a dose of 10 mg/kg showed potential peripheral and central analgesic activity.

Chemical constituents and biological activities of African medicinal tree Sterculia setigera Delile stem bark

Stem bark of Sterculia setigera Delile, family Sterculiaceae, is used in traditional medicine in Sudan and other African countries to treat various diseases. This study aimed to investigate the chemical constituents, antioxidant, enzyme inhibition and antiproliferative activities of stem bark extracts and an isolated compound. Compounds were extracted using hexane and dichloromethane: ethanol (DE) (1:1). Chromatographic techniques were performed to characterize the phenolic compounds. We isolated lupeol as a bioactive compound in S. setigera from DE extract. The antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory properties of each extract were evaluated. The antiproliferative activity of the DE extract was determined. Results showed that five known compounds namely; procyanidins as dimer B, trimer C1 and tetramer, 3,4-dimethoxyphenol ß-D-apiofuranosyl (1″→6″)- ß -D-glucopyranoside and (+)- catechin were identified or tentatively elucidated, in addition to the isolation and characterization of lupeol. DE extract showed significantly (p<0.05) higher antioxidant activity than that observed from the hexane extract. Both extracts displayed considerable enzyme inhibitory activity. DE extract revealed remarkable tyrosinase inhibitory activity (115.26±1.10 mg kojic acid equivalents (KAE)/g) and displayed high antiproliferative activity against human colon adenocarcinoma HT29 (IC50 4.4 ± 0.8 µg/ml) and HCT116 (IC50 7.3 ± 2.2 µg/ml) cell lines without any toxicity to Vero normal cells. Isolated lupeol exerted high tyrosinase inhibitory (37.68±5.65 mg KAE/g) and α-amylase (27.64±0.55 mg galanthamine equivalents/g) activities. In silico study showed that 3,4-Dimethoxyphenol ß -D-apiofuranosyl (1″→6″)-ß-D-glucopyranoside revealed the best docking score for tyrosinase. In conclusion, stem bark of S. setigera could be a rich natural sources of bioactive agents.

HEPATOPROTECTIVE ACTIVITY OF ETHANOLIC STEM BARK EXTRACT OF KNEMA ATTENUATA (HOO K. F. AND THOMSON) WARB

Objective: To investigate the hepatoprotective activity of ethanolic stem bark extract (ESBE) of Knema attenuata against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced hepatotoxicity in Wistar rats using both in vivo and in vitro models.&#x0D; Methods: Animals were treated orally with ESBE (250 mg kg-1 and 500 mg kg-1) once daily for 6 d and CCl4 on the 4th d. On the 7th d, animals were sacrificed and the blood samples were collected to measure the serum levels of biochemical parameters, whereas the liver homogenates were utilized for estimating the antioxidant defense. The hepatoprotective efficacy of the extract was further ensured in vitro using human liver hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cell line against CCl4 induced toxicity. The cell line viability was determined using 3-(4,5-dimethyl thiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay.&#x0D; Results: ESBE effectively reduced (p&lt;0.001) the elevated serum levels of Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) when compared to the toxicant control group. ESBE 500 mg kg-1significantly raised the antioxidant defense (p&lt;0.0001) by reducing the malondialdehyde (MDA) level and enhancing hepatic reduced glutathione (GSH) level in comparison to the CCl4 control group. The in vitro effect was investigated using CCl4 exposed HepG2 cells. Pretreatment with ESBE showed a dose-dependent increase in percentage cell viability ranged between 44 to 57% at 12.5-100 μg ml-1concentrations (p&lt;0.001, when compared to the control cells). &#x0D; Conclusion: Present study confirms the hepatoprotective activity of the stem bark extract of K. attenuata against CCl4‑induced liver damage.

SCREENING OF STEM BARK EXTRACT OF BAUHINIA VARIEGATA LINN. FOR PHYTOCHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS AND PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIVITY

Bauhinia variegata named orchid tree, belongs to the family leguminosae. The methanolic extract of Bauhinia variegata (MEBV) revealed the presence of carbohydrates, proteins, tannins, steroids, triterpenoids and flavonoids. Various CNS models were used to find out the antianxiety activity of Bauhinia variegata. The study was designed to evaluate the antianxiety activity of stem bark extract of Bauhinia variegata. The effect of dried stem bark of Bauhinia variegata (200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg) was evaluated using Elevated Plus Maze, Light and Dark Box, Restrained Stress Model and Novelty Suppressed Feeding Test using a wistar albino rats (n=6) and was statistically analyzed using ONE WAY Annova followed by Dunnett’s test. Oral administration of the methanolic extract of Bauhinia variegata (200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg) showed significant increase in %OAE and %TSOA values for EPM, NEL and TSL values in Light and Dark Box, Restrained Stress Model showed significant increase in %OAE and %TSOA and NEL and TSL values. Novelty suppressed feeding behaivior test showed significantly lower values for latency to feed.From the present study it may be concluded that among both the test groups, MEBV at a dose of 400 mg/kg was found to possess significant anti-anxiety activity.&#x0D; Keywords: EPM- Elevated Plus Maze, NEL- Number of Entries in Light, TSL- Time spent in light.

Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry Characterization of Bioactive Compounds from Ziziphus nummularia (Burm. F.) Stem Bark with Promising In Vitro Antiplasmodial Activity.

Objective:This study was carried out to evaluate the in vitro antiplasmodial activity of alcoholic and hydroalcoholic extract of Ziziphus nummularia stem bark as well as the determination of core structure fractionated from its crude extract.Materials and Methods:The antiplasmodial activity of stem bark extracts was investigated by in vitro schizont maturation inhibition assay against Plasmodium falciparum (both chloroquine sensitive and resistant). The crude extract was analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrophotometry (GC–MS).Result:Both alcoholic and hydroalcoholic extracts showed their potential toward in vitro antiplasmodial activity against P. falciparum strains MRC-02 (CQ sensitive) and RKL-09 (CQ resistant). Alcoholic extract showed more promising antiplasmodial activity with Inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 0.130 and 1.191 for MRC-02 and RKL-09 strains, respectively, as compared to hydroalcoholic extract with IC50 of 1.856 and 2.981 for MRC-02 and RKL-09 strains, respectively. No morphological changes in erythrocytes were observed when investigated for chemical injury to the erythrocytes. Chemical characterization of alcoholic extract was performed by GC–MS analysis to identify the bioactive compounds that are responsible for antiplasmodial activity. Alkyl esters, phenolics, and flavonoids were found as major compounds and also showed resemblance to existing antimalarial drugs.Conclusion:The findings suggested that the investigated extracts will provide a foundation for combating the resistant strains of P. falciparum. Also, the compounds isolated from Z. nummularia crude extract are viable newer chemical antimalarial candidates requiring further investigation.

Antidiarrheal and Antimotility Activities of Stem Bark Extracts of Annona reticulata Linn. in Mice Model

The study was aimed to evaluate the phytochemical screening, in vivo evaluation of antidiarrheal activity, and GI motility of methanolic extract as well as different organic solvent soluble fractions of bark of Annona reticulata Linn. The powdered bark of the plant was extracted with methanol using cold extraction method and fractionated with solvent-solvent partitioning using organic solvents including n-hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, diterpenes, carbohydrate, saponins, phenols, tannins and glycosides. The different organic solvent soluble fractions of bark were evaluated at a concentration of 200 mg/kgbw in castor oil induced diarrheal mice model. The aqueous soluble fractions of bark Annona reticulata showed highest percentage of inhibition of diarrhea (64.91 ± 1.37%), whereas methanol, n-hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate soluble fraction showed 26.99 ± 1.79%, 34.85 ± 1.66%, 52.71 ± 1.42% and 45.45 ± 1.54% of diarrheal inhibition, respectively. At the same time, the reference standard Loperamide (5 mg/kg) exhibited 73.21 ± 2.06% inhibition of diarrhea. In GI motility test by charcoal plug method, the 200 mg/kgbw of aqueous soluble fraction showed highest antimotility activity (68.71 ± 3.98%), whereas methanol, n-hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate soluble fractions showed 66.84 ± 3.38%, 52.01 ± 1.25%, 59.75 ± 3.56% and 54.70 ± 2.12% antimotility activity, respectively. The standard Loperamide (5 mg/kg) revealed 72.41 ± 1.33% inhibition of GI motility, whereas distilled water as control demonstrated 34.06 ± 1.09% of inhibition. This result indicates that the plant extracts have a significant inhibition of GI motility.

Phytochemical and Antimicrobial Activity of Stem Bark Extract of Ficus Plat Platyphylla Extraction and Phytochemical Analysis from the Leave of Vernonia Amygdalina (Shuwaka)

This study was conducted to evaluate selected phytochemicals (antioxidant potentials of aqueous, methanol and ethanol stem bark extracts of Simarouba glauca) relative to standard antioxidants. Sample was harvested, air dried, pulverized and extracted with aqueous and absolute methanol and ethanol; freeze dried at the National Energy Commission Centre, University of Benin. Alkaloids, phenols and tannins were identified, and also flavonoid was detected. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, reducing power activity, total antioxidant activity, hydroxyl radical activity, trolox equivalent antioxidant activity and nitric oxide (NO&bull;) radical scavenging activity of stem bark extracts of S. glauca were evaluated, and all the experiment were conducted in a dose dependent manner. Butylated hydroxytuolene (BHT), ascorbate and trolox were introduced as positive controls (antioxidant). DPPH radical scavenging activity of stem bark extracts did not exhibit anti-radical activity at 50% inhibition but demonstrated less anti-radical activity at percentage inhibition lower than 50%. Extracts yielded significant reducing power and total antioxidant activities (FRAP). Hydroxyl radical scavenging activities of extracts was substantial; extracts exhibited significant anti-radical activity when trolox was introduced as positive antioxidant control, while nitric oxide scavenging activities was unprecedented. The presence of phytochemicals and antioxidant principles proffer high medicinal value to S. glauca. &nbsp; Key words: Simarouba glauca, stem bark, oxidants, radical scavenging properties.
