Event Abstract Back to Event The role of endocannabinergic signalling in peripheral olfactory coding Dirk Czesnik1*, Esther Breunig1, Ivan Manzini1 and Detlev Schild1 1 University of Gottingen, Department of Neurophysiology and Cellular Biophysics, United States The perception of odors is influenced by a variety of neuromodulators, and there is growing evidence that modulation already takes place in the olfactory epithelium. Here we report on cannabinergic actions in the olfactory epithelium of Xenopus laevis tadpoles. First we show that CB1 receptor-specific antagonists modulate odor-evoked activity in olfactory receptor neurons. Second, we localize CB1-like immunoreactivity on dendrites of olfactory receptor neurons. Finally, we analysed 2-AG as endocannabinoid acting in the olfactory epithelium which is synthesised in both receptor neurons and sustentacular cells.
