OWSS: A new signaling system for 100-150 Mb/s wireless LANs

Wireless local area networks have emerged as one of today's driving technologies, delivering high data rates on unlicensed spectrum. This article provides an overview of a new signaling system for high-bit-rate wireless LAN, made possible by a novel class of signaling pulses. Called OWSS pulses, they are generated through a combination of orthogonal wavelength-division multiplexing and spread-spectrum concepts. The system offers several advantages including intrinsic robustness to frequency-selective fading, effective equalization due, in part, to the wide spectrum and wide time-support of the pulses used, high data rate, and flexibility in carving different rates versus multiple access schedules at the physical layer.

Resource scheduling and load balancing in distributed robotic control systems

This paper describes the latest advances made to a software architecture designed to control multiple miniature robots. As the robots themselves have very limited computational capabilities, a distributed control system is needed to coordinate tasks among a large number of robots. Two of the major challenges facing such a system are the scheduling of access to system resources and the distribution of work across multiple workstations. This paper discusses solutions to these problems in the context of a distributed surveillance task.

Improving timely access to primary care: case studies of the advanced access model.

The advanced access model of patient scheduling is based on the core principle that if the capacity to provide patient appointments balances the demand for appointments, patients calling to see their physician are offered an appointment the same day. The accompanying article in the series "Innovations in Primary Care" presents the theory behind advanced access scheduling. In this article we describe 4 case studies of primary care practices that successfully implemented advanced access and 3 examples of practices that were unable to achieve advanced access despite considerable efforts. The lessons of these case studies should be useful for primary care practices desiring to improve timely access to care and wishing to avoid the pitfalls that can derail this innovation.

Distributed dynamic channel access scheduling for ad hoc networks

Three types of collision-free channel access protocols for ad hoc networks are presented. These protocols are derived from a novel approach to contention resolution that allows contending entities to elect one or multiple winners for channel access in any given contention context (e.g., a time slot) in a distributed fashion. The only required information for each entity is the identifiers of its neighbors one and two hops away in the wireless network. The new protocols are shown to be fair and capable of achieving maximal utilization of the channel bandwidth. The delay and throughput characteristics of the contention resolution algorithms are analyzed, and the performance of the three types of channel access protocols is studied by simulations and compared with that of optimal static scheduling algorithms.

Plasticity of Hamster Circadian Entrainment Patterns Depends on Light Intensity

The multiple oscillatory basis of the mammalian circadian pacemaker is adduced by, among other phenomena, the occurrence of split locomotor activity rhythms in rodents after prolonged exposure to constant light. More recently, split rhythms entrained to a 24h light:dark:light:dark cycle have been documented following scheduled access of hamsters to a novel running wheel or by photoperiod manipulations alone. Because the incidence of constant light-induced splitting depends on light intensity, the role of this variable was assessed in this new splitting paradigm. Male Syrian hamsters, entrained to a 14h light:10h dark cycle, were transferred to individual running wheel cages 7h after light onset. Transfer coincided with the beginning of the scotophase of a new photocycle alternating between 5h of relative dark and 7h of light. For four weeks bright photophases (∼350 lux) were alternated with either dim (<0.1 lux) or completely dark (0 lux) scotophases. An additional group received moderate intensity photophases (∼45 lux) paired with dim scotophase illumination. For an additional four weeks, all hamsters were exposed to the same bright:dim light:dark cycle. Dim light in the scotophase significantly increased the incidence of split activity rhythms relative to that observed with completely dark scotophases. Overall wheel-running rates and activity induced by a cage change were also increased in dim light-exposed animals. Group differences largely disappeared four weeks later when hamsters previously maintained in completely dark scotophases were exposed to dim scotophases. Photophase light intensity did not affect the overall incidence of splitting, but influenced the timing of activity in the afternoon scotophase. The effects of dim illumination may be mediated in part via enhanced locomotor responses to transfer to a new cage or by changes in coupling interactions between component oscillators.

Central melanocortin receptor agonist reduces spontaneous and scheduled meal size but does not augment duodenal preload-induced feeding inhibition

Central melanocortin (MC) receptor agonists inhibit food intake and may be downstream mediators of the effects of central leptin, which (1) reduces food intake by selectively decreasing meal size and (2) augments the feeding-inhibitory effects of gastrointestinal food stimuli. Central administration of the MC-3/4 receptor (MC-3/4R) agonist, MTII, inhibits feeding in rats, but its effects on meal pattern and potential interactions with gastrointestinal controls of food intake remain unclear. We examined meal patterns and intake in male Sprague–Dawley rats following central intracerebroventricular administration of MTII (0.01–1.0 nmol) in two situations: (1) during daytime 60-min scheduled access to liquid glucose (12.5%) in combination with a duodenal preload of 12.5% glucose or physiological saline (4.4 ml/10 min), and (2) during subsequent overnight access to 45 mg of solid chow pellets. Both duodenal glucose preloads and MTII reduced subsequent glucose intake. However, no dose of MTII augmented the reductions in food intake produced by duodenal glucose alone. During overnight access to pelleted chow, the 0.1- and 1.0-nmol doses of MTII reduced food intake, meal size, meal duration, and body weight, and increased the satiety ratio (duration of intermeal interval/preceding meal size) but did not change meal frequency. The present data (1) demonstrate that MTII, like leptin, reduces food intake by a selective reduction in meal size and not meal frequency, and (2) suggest that MTII increases the feeding-inhibitory potency of negative feedback signals critical to the control of meal size during spontaneous chow access, but not scheduled access to palatable liquid nutrient solutions.

Reconciling simplicity and realism in parallel disk models

For the design and analysis of algorithms that process huge data sets, a machine model is needed that handles parallel disks. There seems to be a dilemma between simple and flexible use of such a model and accurate modeling of details of the hardware. This paper explains how many aspects of this problem can be resolved. The programming model implements one large logical disk allowing concurrent access to arbitrary sets of variable size blocks. This model can be implemented efficiently on multiple independent disks even if zones with different speed, communication bottlenecks and failed disks are allowed. These results not only provide useful algorithmic tools but also imply a theoretical justification for studying external memory algorithms using simple abstract models. The algorithmic approach is random redundant placement of data and optimal scheduling of accesses. The analysis generalizes a previous analysis for simple abstract external memory models in several ways (higher efficiency, variable block sizes, more detailed disk model).

Selling Open Access Health Care Delivery to Patients and Administrators

A new concept in health care delivery involves the use of Open Access Scheduling for patients. In an attempt to manage spiraling medical costs and patient care demands many medical practices and managed care organizations are looking for alternative delivery models for health care. Open Access Scheduling has been garnering many advocates and converts from past traditional medical service delivery models. Unfortunately, due to its limited penetration into the medical community, little of Open Access' essential characteristics are generally understood. This paper looks at Open Access from the perspectives of: patients, medical administrators, office staff and providers. We discuss the tenets of Open Access, the benefits from its use, its challenges, and the steps necessary to initiate this type of service delivery.

A multiple schedule model of limited access drinking in the cynomolgus macaque.

The present study reports on the development of a multiple schedule procedure of oral ethanol self-administration in cynomolgus macaques. Six adult cynomolgus macaques (four female, two male) were trained to self-administer ethanol and water under a 60 min, four-component multiple schedule of ethanol and water access with 1 g food pellets presented every 900 s (fixed-time 900 s). Water was available for the first and third 15 min components, ethanol in the second and fourth components. Total ethanol dose was stable at between 1-1.25 g/kg at ethanol concentration of 4%, 6% and 8%. Subsequently water was replaced with a sweetened drink (sugar-free Tang powder, General Foods). Ethanol and Tang were self-administered in similar volumes and both served as reinforcers compared with water. Acute pretreatment with 0.25 to 1.5 g/kg of intragastrically gavaged (i.g.) ethanol failed to alter ethanol or Tang self-administration significantly despite producing mean blood ethanol levels of up to 199 mg/dl when combined with self-administered ethanol. However, 1.0 g/kg i.g. ethanol administered for 15 consecutive days significantly decreased ethanol self-administration by 23%. The results suggest that ethanol self-administration under a multiple schedule is insensitive to alteration by acute ethanol pretreatment, but can be decreased by more prolonged chronic ethanol pretreatment.
