A History of the Eastern Economic Association: 50 Years of Finding Space for Pluralism and Inclusion in Economics

AbstractDrawing on archival data and oral histories, this paper examines the history of the Eastern Economic Association from its beginnings in 1974 to its 50th anniversary in 2024. It sheds light on the ideological, social, and political motivations behind the EEA’s founding, focusing on its commitment to addressing the narrowness of the economics profession and the marginalization of women and underrepresented minorities. It also documents some of the problems that the Eastern Economic Association and the Eastern Economic Journal faced over time and how they have resolved these problems. Based on this history and analysis, the paper contributes to a deeper understanding of the EEA’s enduring impact on the field of economics and its continuing relevance in fostering a more inclusive and pluralistic academic community.

The First Decade of SuFEx Chemistry: Advancements in SuFEx Polymerization, Non-Canonical SuFEx Reactions, and SuFEx Radiochemistry

This year marks the 10th anniversary of SuFEx chemistry, a field that has witnessed significant advancements over the past decade. These include efficient synthetic strategies toward polymerization via SuFEx approach leading to diverse polymers, alongside the discovery of new SuFExable hubs and coupling conditions. Non-canonical reactions, such as deoxyfluorination and on-water reactions, have also emerged. Furthermore, there have been substantial strides in the radiosynthesis of [18F] SuFExable hubs. This review provides an overview of these developments, focusing on polymerization, non-canonical reaction, and radiochemistry in SuFEx chemistry.

Twenty years of Poland–Ukraine cross-border cooperation: reflections and responses in the wake of the Russian military aggression

This paper marks the 20th anniversary of Poland–Ukraine cross-border cooperation (CBC), emphasising the impacts of the recent Russian military aggression. The study explores how these geopolitical tensions have influenced CBC initiatives, particularly highlighting the challenges and responses within the existing frameworks. By documenting the resilience and adaptability of CBC in the face of military conflict, this paper offers insights into the crucial role of regional collaborations in maintaining cross-border interactions and mitigating crisis impacts.

Historical synthesis of the International Commission on Water Resources Systems

The planning, designing, management, and operation of water systems has been one of the most important activities throughout the history of humankind. However, as a scientific and applied discipline, it evolved about 70 years ago. The International Commission on Water Resources Systems (ICWRS) has primarily focused on developing and implementing improved methods for water resources management for the benefit of society since the 1970s. This paper reviews the history of the Water Resources Systems (WRS) discipline over these six decades after the 100th anniversary of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) and aims to make a synthesis of the history of ICWRS. In the concluding section, an outlook for researchers and decision-makers on the future development of water resource systems research is also provided.

40 Years of Clinics in Dermatology

In 2023, Clinics in Dermatology marked its 40th anniversary, celebrating a remarkable journey of excellence since its inception in 1983. Still, led by its founding editor, Lawrence Charles Parish, the journal has consistently delivered cutting-edge research and clinical insights, becoming a cornerstone resource in dermatology. The journal has published 3667 documents. In all publications, 4,311 authors from 4,248 departments and 78 countries played a pivotal role. We provided data about the total number of publications and citations for each contributor (author, department, and country). By co-word analysis, we presented the central theme of publications, which may offer a nuanced understanding of Clinics in Dermatology's diverse and influential contributions to dermatological science.

National Council on Radiation Protection (NCRP) 2024 annual meeting: advanced and small modular nuclear power reactors**The authors have confirmed that any identifiable participants in this study have given their consent for publication.

On 25-26 March 2023, the U.S. National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) held its 2024 annual meeting in Bethesda, Maryland, USA. The NCRP dates from 1929, and this meeting celebrated the 60th anniversary of receiving a U.S. Congressional Charter. For this annual meeting the NCRP felt it was essential to provide a briefing about advanced and small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). The Journal of Radiological Protection is delighted to publish the following synopsis of material presented at the U.S. NCRP meeting. This synopsis is divided into five sections. The first section provides an overview of the whole meeting together with summaries of two context setting overview papers. The following four sessions of this synopsis are specific to advanced and small modular nuclear power reactors. The meeting also included keynote presentations by three of NCRP annual award recipients. The meeting topical areas were Technology Overview and Critical Issues. The individual papers laid the groundwork to understanding reactor technologies, terminology, and the fundamental concepts and processes for electrical generation. The perspectives of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and states, through the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors were provided. The papers included a discussion of diverse topics including potential emergency preparedness considerations, radiological survey requirements, an evaluation of the future of nuclear power, the economics of reactors (both large and small), and the critical issues identified by the recent National Academies of Sciences' study on advanced reactors. The summary papers were developed to briefly document the major points and concepts presented during the oral papers presented at the 2024 NCRP Annual Meeting. The meeting heralded the dawn of a new era for commercial nuclear power.

From monuments to living heritage. Revisiting the Venice Charter in the conservation of younger industrial heritage

The Venice Charter of 1964 has been the benchmark for tenets governing architectural conservation and set forth pivotal principles that shaped conservation practices for decades. However, conceived during a time when heritage was primarily associated with physical monuments, the landscape of cultural heritage has transformed significantly since then, encompassing immaterial aspects, democratisation of heritage values, and diverse sustainability considerations.This research aims at exploring the strengths, limitations, and adaptability of the Venice Charter in light of evolving perspectives on heritage. The paper delves into the charter's historical context, asking whether it remains a guiding beacon or a potential hindrance. A key focus of the research is the examination of obstacles associated with the conservation of younger heritage in the face of contemporary challenges posed by sustainability imperatives. The inherent complexities of managing heritage structures marked by ongoing developmental histories and changes are explored with an example of industrial heritage dealing with the concept of ‘living heritage’. In the context of a future where resource responsibility and reuse are paramount matters, firm definitions of original substance as defined in the Venice Charter, as well as a static perception of conservation, may pose challenges, particularly for unintentional monuments situated in complex environments or marked by evolving narratives through time. Marking the 60th anniversary of the Venice Charter, this research sheds light on the charter’s legacy and its validity in the contemporary landscape of heritage protection as well as the future role of the monuments in our ever-changing societal context.

British contributions to the therapeutic use of John Cade's lithium.

Coinciding with the 75th anniversary of John Cade's seminal publication that first reported lithium's antimanic efficacy, we briefly recount the salient findings of the historic paper and draw attention to the important psychiatric research in Britain that reinforced its findings and the critical British opinions that likely impeded its clinical use.

US American empire and the telos of US immigration law from 1924 to 2024

ABSTRACT Reflecting on the 100th anniversary of the 1924 Immigration Act, this brief essay suggests that the idea of “US American Empire” forms the telos of the last one hundred years of US immigration policy. Whether in the twentieth or the twenty-first centuries, or under Republican or Democratic leadership, US lawmakers have sought to restrict immigration to those who were deemed most “assimilable.” Such moves are not only about preserving or instituting a particular racial character of the United States but ensuring a particular role for the United States globally.

Introductory note: the 25 April as seen from abroad

The 50th anniversary of the 25 April has been commemorated in 2024. This special issue of the journal Relações Internacionais evokes this event, bringing together a collection of texts presenting different perspectives and approaches on how the events in Portugal were welcomed in various countries.

‘Who have I forgotten': reflections on democracy, memory and colonialism

The pages that Miguel Cardina devotes to his book O Atrito da Memória (The Friction of Memory), published in 2023 by Tinta-da-china, seem scant. The book is subtitled Colonialismo, Guerra e Descolonização no Portugal Contemporâneo (Colonialism, War and Decolonization in Contemporary Portugal) and sets out to analyze the characteristics of the construction of the country’s collective memory regarding the colonial experience, at a time when we are approaching, at high speed, the 50th anniversary of 25 April 1974 and the formal decolonization of the former Portuguese colonies.
