Fabrication and Properties of Hydrogel Dressings Based on Genipin Crosslinked Chondroitin Sulfate and Chitosan.

Multifunctional hydrogel dressings remain highly sought after for the promotion of skin wound regeneration. In the present study, multifunctional CHS-DA/HACC (CH) hydrogels with an interpenetrated network were constructed using hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride modified chitosan (HACC) and dopamine-modified chondroitin sulfate (CHS-DA), using genipin as crosslinker. The synthesis of HACC and CHS-DA was effectively confirmed using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy. The prepared CH hydrogels exhibited a network of interconnected pores within the microstructure. Furthermore, rheological testing demonstrated that CH hydrogels exhibited strong mechanical properties, stability, and injectability. Further characterization investigations showed that the CH hydrogels showed favorable self-healing and self-adhesion properties. It was also shown that increasing HACC concentration ratio was positively correlated with the antibacterial activity of CH hydrogels, as evidenced by their resistance to Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Additionally, Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) tests, fluorescent images, and a cell scratch assay demonstrated that CH hydrogels had good biocompatibility and cell migration ability. The multifunctional interpenetrated network hydrogels were shown to have good antibacterial properties, antioxidant properties, stable storage modulus and loss modulus, injectable properties, self-healing properties, and biocompatibility, highlighting their potential as wound dressings in wound healing applications.

Preparation and Properties of Crosslinked Quaternized Chitosan-Based Hydrogel Films Ionically Bonded with Acetylsalicylic Acid for Biomedical Materials.

The aim of the current study is to develop chitosan-based biomaterials which can sustainably release acetylsalicylic acid while presenting significant biological activity. Herein, an innovative ionic bonding strategy between hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) and acetylsalicylic acid (AA) was proposed, skillfully utilizing the electrostatic attraction of the ionic bond to achieve the controlled release of drugs. Based on this point, six crosslinked N-[(2-hydroxy-3-trimethylammonium)propyl]chitosan acetylsalicylic acid salt (CHACAA) hydrogel films with varying acetylsalicylic acid contents were prepared by a crosslinking reaction. The results of 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR) and scanning electron morphology (SEM) confirmed the crosslinked structure, while the obtained hydrogel films possessed favorable thermal stability, mechanical properties, and swelling ability. In addition, the drug release behavior of the hydrogel films was also investigated. As expected, the prepared hydrogel films demonstrated the capability for the sustainable release of acetylsalicylic acid due to ion pair attraction dynamics. Furthermore, the bioactivities of CHACAA-3 and CHACAA-4 hydrogel films with acetylsalicylic acid molar equivalents of 1.25 and 1.5 times those of HACC were particularly pronounced, which not only exhibited an excellent drug sustained-release ability and antibacterial effect, but also had a higher potential for binding and scavenging inflammatory factors, including NO and TNF-α. These findings suggest that CHACAA-3 and CHACAA-4 hydrogel films hold great potential for applications in wound dressing, tissue engineering scaffolds, and drug carriers.

Biodegradable packaging paper derived from chitosan-based composite barrier coating for agricultural products preservation

Development of green packaging materials is essential to replace traditional plastics in fresh agricultural products preservation. Herein, a coated paper was designed by applying chitosan-based composite coating on paper substrate through a facile automatic coating method. The hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) was obtained by direct quaternization via the introduction of hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride into the amino group of chitosan, then mixed with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to prepare the HACC/PVA coating. Accordingly, the key performance of coated paper were improved ascribed to the synergy effect of HACC/PVA coating and paper substrate. In particular, the minimum oxygen permeability of the coated paper could reach to 0.87 × 10−13 cm3·cm/cm2·s·Pa, and the optimum water vapor permeability and tensile strength of HACC/PVA coated paper was 0.75 × 10−12 g·cm/cm2·s·Pa and 6.88 kN/m, respectively. The coated paper used as packaging material not only reduced weight loss ratio of strawberry and greengrocery, but also exhibited lower chromatic aberration and better sensory evaluation, indicating a favorable effect on fruit and vegetable storage. Taken together, the designed eco-friendly coated paper has shown tremendous potential for green and biodegradable packaging material in agricultural products preservation.

Hydrophilic and antimicrobial properties of hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan/graphene oxide membrane for dye rejection

Graphene oxide (GO) -based membranes have attracted attention in dye wastewater treatment in recent years. However, water permeance and methyl orange (MO) rejection need improvement. In this work, a simple method was used to incorporate hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HTCC) to enhance the charge of the membrane. An optimized HTCC-GO composite membrane (HGM membrane) containing a 2: 1 ratio of HTCC to GO membrane significantly improved MO rejection (96.94 %), and achieved high rejection of the other three dye molecules studied in this work (>93 %), and also realized a two-fold higher water permeance (28.09 L m−2 h−1 bar−1) compared to a pure GO membrane. Furthermore, the hydrophilic and antimicrobial properties of HGM membranes are enhanced as a result of quaternary ammonium groups in HTCC. Moreover, the acid-base stability of HGM membranes was also improved in comparison to the original GO membrane. This work provides a reference for the modification of GO-based membranes and their application in the direction of practical treatment of dye wastewater.

MnO2 nanozyme boosts synergistic photodynamic/photothermal therapy of bacterial biofilm infections

As a near-infrared (NIR) adsorbing dye approved by the FDA, indocyanine green (ICG) can serve as an attractive therapeutic agent to combat biofilm infections through synergistic photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) due to its deep-tissue penetration ability. However, ICG usually suffers from photo/thermal instability. Herein, to tackle the issues, bovine serum albumin (BSA) stabilized nanozyme MnO2 (BSA/MnO2) was synthesized by reducing manganese permanganate (KMnO4) with BSA, which was further loaded with ICG and coated with the positively charged hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) as the bacterial targeting moiety through noncovalent interactions. The constructed ICG@BSA/MnO2@HACC (IBMH) displays good photodynamic/thermal effects and bacterial targetability, enabling a synergistic PDT/PTT therapy against biofilm-associated infections. Compared with free ICG, IBMH exhibits enhanced photo/thermal stability owing to the O2-generating and photothermal capacities of MnO2, which significantly promotes biofilm phototherapy. Meanwhile, IBMH can effectively achieve anti-inflammatory effect due to the reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging capacity of nanozyme MnO2, thereby greatly accelerating wound healing after synergistic PDT/PTT. Both in vitro and in vivo assays solidly demonstrate its satisfactory anti-biofilm and anti-inflammatory effects. Therefore, our research proposes a promising and convenient strategy for developing multifunctional nanozyme for synergistic PDT/PTT of biofilm infection.

Well-designed chitosan-based cationic porous polymer: A robust material for effective adsorption of endocrine disrupting chemicals

There is an immediate need for meticulous design of easily accessible, cost-effective, chemically stable and eco-friendly materials for effectively removal of water contaminant. Herein, targeting typical water contaminants, endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), three cationic hyper-cross-linked porous polymers (ciHCP-1, ciHCP-2, ciHCP-3) with multiple adsorption sites were designed with 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) as precursor. The ciHCP-3 with large surface area (806 m2 g−1) exhibited high sorption capacity (137–366 mg g−1), and fast adsorption kinetics (5 min) for the EDCs, which is superior to the reported sorbents. The adsorption mechanisms can be attributed to the synergistic effect of physisorption and chemisorption. The high preparation reproducibility, physicochemical stability, and reuse capability of ciHCP highlights its great potential in practical water remediation applications.

Enhanced pH-sensitive anthocyanin film based on chitosan quaternary ammonium salt: A promising colorimetric indicator for visual pork freshness monitoring

An intelligent pH response indicator film is an easy-to-use device for the real-time monitoring of meat freshness during transport and storage. Therefore, a novel pH-sensitive anthocyanin indicator film composed of polyvinyl alcohol–blueberry anthocyanin (BA)–2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) called PAH-2.0 with 1.2 mg/mL HACC to monitor meat freshness using HACC as the colorimetric enhancer has been developed. BA and HACC were mixed and immobilized in the polyvinyl alcohol matrix by hydrogen bonds, as confirmed via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The inclusion of HACC improved the color stability and antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the PAH-2.0 film. When applied to pork for freshness monitoring at 4 °C, three freshness stages, including fresh, sub-fresh, and spoiled, could be clearly distinguished based on the color variations of the PAH-2.0 film. The distinct hierarchical color change from purple to blue-violet and finally to grayish-blue was highly correlated with the indicators of pork freshness: pH values, total volatile basic nitrogen, and total viable count. This study provides a simple and promising approach for fabricating meat freshness indicator films with high color recognition accuracy, thereby offering new possibilities for visual meat freshness monitoring.

Effects of quaternization sites and crossing methods on the slow-release and antibacterial effects of hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan/dialdehyde chitosan-based film

In this study, the active food packaging film were prepared using hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan with different substitution sites (O-HACC & N-HACC) and dialdehyde chitosan (DCS) grafted with protocatechuic acid (PA). To explore the effect of chitosan quaternization positions and crosslinking approaches on the slow-release and antibacterial properties, the double-crosslinked film were fabricated through the self-coupling reaction of PA and Schiff base reaction between amino groups on HACC and aldehyde groups on DCS. The HACC/DCS-based film exhibited stable porous three-dimensional networks with high nisin loading ratios (>90 %). With the participation of the catechol-catechol structure, the dense double-crosslinked film effectively restricted the diffusion of the water molecules, resulting in excellent slow-release properties fitting with the Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetic model. Especially, O-HACC/PA-g-DCS film, which had more reaction sites for Schiff base crosslinking than N-HACC, exhibited the equilibrium swelling ratio of 800 % at 60 h and could sustainably release nisin via non-Fickian diffusion behavior until 48 h. Moreover, the HACC/DCS-based double-crosslinked film performed good long-time antibacterial activity and preservation effects on salmon. On the 10th day of storage, the TVBN of N-HACC/PA-g-DCS and O-HACC/PA-g-DCS groups were only 28.26 ± 1.93 and 29.06 ± 1.68 mg/100 g and still lower than the thresholds.

Efficient adsorption of cationic dyes by a novel honeycomb-like porous hydrogel with ultrahigh mechanical property

The optimization of hydrogel structure is crucial for adsorption capacity, mechanical stability, and reusability. Herein, a chitosan and laponite-XLS co-doped poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) hydrogel (CXAA) with honeycomb-like porous structures is synthesized by cooperative cross-linking of 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) and laponite-XLS in reticular frameworks of acrylic acid (AAc) and acrylamide (AM). The CXAA exhibits extraordinary mechanical performances including tough tensile strength (3.36 MPa) and elasticity (2756 %), which facilitates recycling in practical adsorption treatment and broadens potential applications. Since the regular porous structures can fully expose numerous adsorption sites and electronegative natures within polymer materials, CXAA displays efficient and selective adsorption properties for cationic dyes like methylene blue (MB) and malachite green (MG) from mixed pollutants and can reach record-high values (MB = 6886 mg g−1, MG = 11,381 mg g−1) compared with previously reported adsorbents. Therefore, CXAA exhibits promising potential for separating cationic and anionic dyes by their charge disparities. Mechanism studies show that the synergistic effects of HACC, laponite-XLS, and functional groups in monomers promote highly efficient adsorption. Besides, the adsorption capacity of CXAA remains stable even after undergoing five cycles of regeneration. The results confirm that CXAA is a promising adsorbent for effectively removing organic dyes in wastewater.

Biohybrid Nanorobots Carrying Glycoengineered Extracellular Vesicles Promote Diabetic Wound Repair through Dual-Enhanced Cell and Tissue Penetration.

Considerable progress has been made in the development of drug delivery systems for diabetic wounds. However, underlying drawbacks, such as low delivery efficiency and poor tissue permeability, have rarely been addressed. In this study, a multifunctional biohybrid nanorobot platform comprising an artificial unit and several biological components is constructed. The artificial unit is a magnetically driven nanorobot surface modified with antibacterial 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan, which enables the entire platform to move and has excellent tissue penetration capacity. The biological components are two-step engineered extracellular vesicles that are first loaded with mangiferin, a natural polyphenolic compound with antioxidant properties, and then glycoengineered on the surface to enhance cellular uptake efficiency. As expected, the platform is more easily absorbed by endothelial cells and fibroblasts and exhibits outstanding dermal penetration performance and antioxidant properties. Encouraging results are also observed in infected diabetic wound models, showing improved wound re-epithelialization, collagen deposition, angiogenesis, and accelerated wound healing. Collectively, a biohybrid nanorobot platform that possesses the functionalities of both artificial units and biological components serves as an efficient delivery system to promote diabetic wound repair through dual-enhanced cell and tissue penetration and multistep interventions.

Repair of undersea concrete using biopolymer-assisted plant urease

Concrete repair in marine environments is influenced by various factors, particularly underwater pressure and dynamic water flow. Traditional materials used for underwater concrete repair suffer from issues such as dilution, dispersion, susceptibility to erosion by moving water, and poor grout retention. In this study, a novel biopolymer-based undersea crack repair material composed of quaternized chitosan (Hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan, HACC), sodium alginate (SA), urease, and aggregates was developed. It investigated the impact of biopolymers on urease's physiological and biochemical properties, as well as its mineralization capacity. Additionally, It conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the fluidity, rheological behavior, grout retention, mechanical properties, and anti-permeability rate of the bio-grouting material. The results showed that the optimized bio-grouting material exhibited suitable viscosity and fluidity. After injection, it rapidly formed a cohesive seal, with a grout retention rate exceeding 90 % at 48 days. The water resistance of the repaired concrete reached 93 %. Microstructural analysis using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed strong electrostatic interactions between HACC and SA molecular chains. These interactions encapsulated mineralization products and sand particles, resulting in a denser microstructure.

Multifunctional double-network hydrogel with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory synergistic effects contributes to wound healing of bacterial infection

Wound infection not only hinders the time sequence of tissue repair, but also may lead to serious complications. Multifunctional wound dressings with biocompatibility, excellent mechanical properties and antibacterial properties can promote wound healing during skin infection and reduce the use of antibiotics. In this study, a multifunctional dual-network antibacterial hydrogel was constructed based on the electrostatic interaction of two polyelectrolytes, hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) and sodium alginate (SA). Attributing to the suitable physical crosslinking between HACC and SA, the hydrogel not only has good biocompatibility, mechanical property, but also has broad-spectrum antibacterial properties. In vivo results showed that the hydrogel could regulate M2 polarization, promote early vascular regeneration, and create a good microenvironment for wound healing. Therefore, this hydrogel is an effective multifunctional wound dressing. Consequently, we propose a novel hydrogel with combined elements to expedite the intricate repair of wound infection.

NIR-activated electrospun nanodetonator dressing enhances infected diabetic wound healing with combined photothermal and nitric oxide-based gas therapy

Diabetic wounds pose a challenge to healing due to increased bacterial susceptibility and poor vascularization. Effective healing requires simultaneous bacterial and biofilm elimination and angiogenesis stimulation. In this study, we incorporated polyaniline (PANI) and S-Nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) into a polyvinyl alcohol, chitosan, and hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (PVA/CS/HTCC) matrix, creating a versatile wound dressing membrane through electrospinning. The dressing combines the advantages of photothermal antibacterial therapy and nitric oxide gas therapy, exhibiting enduring and effective bactericidal activity and biofilm disruption against methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. Furthermore, the membrane’s PTT effect and NO release exhibit significant synergistic activation, enabling a nanodetonator-like burst release of NO through NIR irradiation to disintegrate biofilms. Importantly, the nanofiber sustained a uniform release of nitric oxide, thereby catalyzing angiogenesis and advancing cellular migration. Ultimately, the employment of this membrane dressing culminated in the efficacious amelioration of diabetic-infected wounds in Sprague–Dawley rats, achieving wound closure within a concise duration of 14 days. Upon applying NIR irradiation to the PVA-CS-HTCC-PANI-GSNO nanofiber membrane, it swiftly eradicates bacteria and biofilm within 5 min, enhancing its inherent antibacterial and anti-biofilm properties through the powerful synergistic action of PTT and NO therapy. It also promotes angiogenesis, exhibits excellent biocompatibility, and is easy to use, highlighting its potential in treating diabetic wounds.Graphical

Sea urchin-like nanocarrier for enhancing pesticide retention and rain fastness on hydrophobic and hydrophilic crop foliage

Foliar washoff by rainfall is a major factor inducing the inefficient utilization of pesticides. Enhancing the adhesion and retention of pesticide on plant foliage has long been of interest. The presence of waxy platelets on most plant foliage surfaces renders them rough and hydrophobic. This reduces the area of contact between pesticide particle and plant foliage, which decreases the adhesion. In this study, we developed a pesticide nanocarrier (PANI/HACC) with sea urchin-like surface morphology based on polyaniline (PANI) doped with biodegradable 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC). Then, azoxystrobin (AZOX) loaded nanoparticles (AZOX@PANI/HACC) was synthesized by physical adsorption. It exhibited retention rates of 61.4% on rice leaves and 64.6% on cucumber leaves, which were higher than that of commercially available azoxystrobin water dispersible granules (AZOX-WDG, 42.1% and 24.5%, respectively) and suspension concentrates (AZOX-SC, 23.1% and 58.8%, respectively). Additionally, pot experiments demonstrated that the control efficacy of AZOX@PANI/HACC on rice against Rhizoctonia solani was 1.64-fold and 3.0-fold of that of AZOX-WDG and AZOX-SC, respectively. The higher retention performance of AZOX@PANI/HACC was attributed to the stable adhesion by fitting nanometer-sized spikes into the spaces between the waxy platelets. Overall, the pesticide nanocarrier with spiky surface morphology provides an effective strategy for improving pesticide retention and reducing pesticide loss in agricultural production.

Bletilla striata Polysaccharide-/Chitosan-Based Self-Healing Hydrogel with Enhanced Photothermal Effect for Rapid Healing of Diabetic Infected Wounds via the Regulation of Microenvironment.

The management of diabetic ulcers poses a significant challenge worldwide, and persistent hyperglycemia makes patients susceptible to bacterial infections. Unfortunately, the overuse of antibiotics may lead to drug resistance and prolonged infections, contributing to chronic inflammation and hindering the healing process. To address these issues, a photothermal therapy technique was incorporated in the preparation of wound dressings. This innovative solution involved the formulation of a self-healing and injectable hydrogel matrix based on the Schiff base structure formed between the oxidized Bletilla striata polysaccharide (BSP) and hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride chitosan. Furthermore, the introduction of CuO nanoparticles encapsulated in polydopamine imparted excellent photothermal properties to the hydrogel, which promoted the release of berberine (BER) loaded on the nanoparticles and boosted the antibacterial performance. In addition to providing a reliable physical protection to the wound, the developed hydrogel, which integrated the herbal components of BSP and BER, effectively accelerated wound closure via microenvironment regulation, including alleviated inflammatory reaction, stimulated re-epithelialization, and reduced oxidative stress based on the promising results from cell and animal experiments. These impressive outcomes highlighted their clinical potential in safeguarding the wound against bacterial intrusion and managing diabetic ulcers.

Multifunctional chitosan-based lanthanide luminescent hydrogel with stretchability, adhesion, self-healing, color tunability and antibacterial ability

Lanthanide luminescent hydrogels have broad application prospects in various fields. However, most of lanthanide hydrogels possess relatively simple functions, which is not conducive to practical applications. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly urgent to develop multifunctional hydrogels. Herein, a multifunctional chitosan-based lanthanide luminescent hydrogel with ultra-stretchability, multi-adhesion, excellent self-healing, emission color tunability, and good antibacterial ability was prepared by a simple one-step free radical polymerization. In this work, our designed lanthanide complexes [Ln(4-VDPA)3] contain three reaction sites, which can be copolymerized with N-[tris(hydroxymethyl) methyl] acrylamide (THMA), acrylamide (AM), and diacryloyl poly(ethylene glycol) (DPEG) to form the first chemical crosslinking network, while hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) interacts with the hydroxyl and amino groups derived from the chemical crosslinking network through hydrogen bonds to form the second physical crosslinking network. The structure of the double network as well as the dynamic hydrogen bond and lanthanide coordination endow the hydrogel with excellent stretchability, adhesion and self-healing properties. Moreover, the introduction of lanthanide complexes and chitosan makes the hydrogel exhibit outstanding luminescence and antibacterial performances. This research not only realizes the simple synthesis of multifunctional luminescent hydrogels, but also provides a new idea for the fabrication of biomass-based hydrogels as intelligent and sustainable materials.

Improvement of the Antioxidant and Antitumor Activities of Benzimidazole-Chitosan Quaternary Ammonium Salt on Drug Delivery Nanogels.

The present study focused on the design and preparation of acid-responsive benzimidazole-chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (BIMIXHAC) nanogels for a controlled, slow-release of Doxorubicin HCl (DOX.HCl). The BIMIXHAC was crosslinked with sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) using the ion crosslinking method. The method resulted in nanogels with low polydispersity index, small particle size, and positive zeta potential values, indicating the good stability of the nanogels. Compared to hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan-Doxorubicin HCl-sodium tripolyphosphate (HACC-D-TPP) nanogel, the benzimidazole-chitosan quaternary ammonium salt-Doxorubicin HCl-sodium tripolyphosphate (BIMIXHAC-D-TPP) nanogel show higher drug encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity (BIMIXHAC-D-TPP 93.17 ± 0.27% and 31.17 ± 0.09%), with acid-responsive release profiles and accelerated release in vitro. The hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan-sodium tripolyphosphate (HACC-TPP), and benzimidazole-chitosan quaternary ammonium salt-sodium tripolyphosphate (BIMIXHAC-TPP) nanogels demonstrated favorable antioxidant capability. The assay of cell viability, measured by the MTT assay, revealed that nanogels led to a significant reduction in the cell viability of two cancer cells: the human lung adenocarcinoma epithelial cell line (A549) and the human breast cancer cell line (MCF-7). Furthermore, the BIMIXHAC-D-TPP nanogel was 2.96 times less toxic than DOX.HCl to the mouse fibroblast cell line (L929). It was indicated that the BIMIXHAC-based nanogel with enhanced antioxidant and antitumor activities and acidic-responsive release could serve as a potential nanocarrier.

PH-responsive nanogels with enhanced antioxidant and antitumor activities on drug delivery and smart drug release

pH-responsive nanogels have played an increasingly momentous role in tumor treatment. The focus of this study is to design and develop pH-responsive benzimidazole-chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (BIMIXHAC) nanogels for the controlled release of doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) while enhancing its hydrophilicity. BIMIXHAC is crosslinked with carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC), hyaluronic acid sodium salt (HA), and sodium alginates (SA) using an ion crosslinking method. The chemical structure of chitosan derivatives was verified by 1H NMR and FT-IR techniques. Compared to hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC)-based nanogels, BIMIXHAC-based nanogels exhibit better drug encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity (BIMIXHAC-D-HA 91.76 %, and 32.23 %), with pH-responsive release profiles and accelerated release in vitro. The series of nanogels formed by crosslinking with three different polyanionic crosslinkers have different particle size potentials and antioxidant properties. BIMIXHAC-HA, BIMIXHAC-SA and BIMIXHAC-CMC demonstrate favorable antioxidant capability. In addition, cytotoxicity tests showed that BIMIXHAC-based nanogels have high biocompatibility. BIMIXHAC-based nanogels exhibit preferable anticancer effects on MCF-7 and A549 cells. Furthermore, the BIMIXHAC-D-HA nanogel was 2.62 times less toxic than DOX to L929 cells. These results suggest that BIMIXHAC-based nanogels can serve as pH-responsive nanoplatforms for the delivery of anticancer drugs.

Antimicrobial films fabricated with myricetin nanoparticles and chitosan derivation microgels for killing pathogenic bacteria in drinking water

Pathogenic bacteria in drinking water threaten human health and life. In the work, antimicrobial films composed of myricetin@tannic acid (My@TA) nanoparticles (NPs) and chitosan derivation microgels were developed to kill pathogenic bacteria in drinking water. Hydrophobic My was first made into water soluble My@TA NPs using a solvent exchange method with TA as stabilizer. Polymeric microgels of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)/hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) were then fabricated with a blending method. CMCS&HACC/My@TA multilayer films were further deposited on the internal surface of PET bottles by using a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique. The PET bottles coated with the films could effectively kill pathogenic bacteria in water such as S. aureus, E. coli, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Listeria monocytogenes and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In addition, CMCS&HACC/My@TA films displayed good antioxidant activity, water resistance, and in vivo biocompatibility with heart, liver, spleen, lung and kidney organs. We believe that the container coated with CMCS&HACC/My@TA films can be applied to prevent microbial contamination of drinking water.

Layer-by-layer microneedle patch with antibacterial and antioxidant dual activities for accelerating bacterial-infected wound healing

Bacterial-infected wound healing has always been a huge challenge to humans. Owing to the appearance of antibiotic resistance, there is an emergency need to design antibiotic-free wound dressings to treat such wounds. Herein, a novel antibiotic-free microneedle patch was designed, which its backing layer with antioxidant effect was coated with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, 2-O-α-D-glucopyranosyl-L-ascorbic acid (GLAA), and 2-hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan through electrostatic interaction based on layer-by-layer self-assembly technique, and its tips consisted of gelatin and tannic acid (TA) via hydrogen bonding interaction (CGH/GTA MN patch). The obtained CGH/GTA MN patch could effectively puncture the skin, and exhibit properties of pH-responsive TA and GLAA release. In vitro experiments showed that the obtained CGH/GTA MN patch has excellent antioxidative (scavenging DPPH efficacy is above 80 %, and scavenging ABTS efficiency reaches about 100 %), antibacterial (antibacterial rates of nearly 100 % for both Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli)), biodegradable, and biocompatible properties. In the S. aureus-infected rat wounds, the CGH/GTA MN patch could efficiently accelerate infected-wound healing by eliminating S. aureus infection, inhibiting inflammation, promoting angiogenesis, and accelerating epidermal regeneration. Thus, this study will provide a promising strategy to heal bacterial-infected wounds.
