Analysis of the relationship between organisational culture and innovation in Nigerian quantity surveying firms

Quantity Surveying firms in contemporary times have evolved into structurally standard organizations where there is the understanding of organizational culture as an essential management philosophy that drives innovation. This paper seeks to analyze specifically, the relationship between organizational culture and innovation in Quantity Surveying firms. Eighty one (81) completed questionnaires retrieved were used for this analysis. The paper revealed that Quantity Surveying firms exhibited multiple types of innovation such as service innovation, process innovation, organizational innovation, market innovation and resource innovation. It further revealed that quantity surveying firms exhibited multiple types of organizational culture such as competitive culture, social responsibility culture supportiveness' culture, innovation culture, emphasis etc. It therefore concluded that organizational culture has a significant relationship with innovation in quantity surveying firms. The findings implied that there were need for the management of Quantity Surveying firms to embrace organizational culture as a strategy for improving innovation practice and there is also the need for the management of Quantity Surveying firms to embrace innovation as a strategy for improving organizational culture.

Users’ satisfaction in selected public housing estates in Lagos, Nigeria

The needs of residents have often not been considered in public housing provision, resulting into poor housing quality. This consequently affects satisfaction level of the inhabitants. The study aimed to examine residents housing satisfaction in selected public housing estates in Lagos with a view to providing a framework that could enhance policy response for effective public housing provision in the city. Three public estates were selected. The study adopted a mixed method that combines qualitative and quantitative approaches as it utilized primary and secondary data. The primary source of data was derived from the social survey conducted on the residents in the selected estates. The Simple Random Sampling was used to select the three public residential estates and the Stratified Sampling Technique was adopted to select the houses from which a resident was sampled in each. Questionnaires were administered and analyzed using SPSS 8.1. It was found that they were fairly satisfied with the type of buildings and the space allocation within the buildings, but were fairly satisfied with the level of communal activities and social interaction of residents in the estates. There is an adoption of innovative Public-Private Partnerships and development of future scenarios for public housing, Integration of rental housing and home-ownership and design, materials, technology and professionals for public housing were recommended to increase the satisfaction level of residents in the estates.

E-learning resources for teaching in office technology and management in polytechnics in North Central States

This study was conducted to examine the e-learning resources for teaching in Office Technology and Management in Polytechnics in North Central States. The researcher adopted survey research design for the study. The population for the study comprised 114 Office Technology and Management lecturers in Polytechnics in North Central States. The entire population was studied; therefore, no sample was drawn. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire of 28 items. The instrument was validated by three experts in Office Technology and Management. Out of 114 copies of the questionnaire distributed, 110 were duly completed and returned representing 96% return rate. Data collected were analysed using mean and standard deviation. The result of the analyses showed that e-learning hardware, software and human resources were required for teaching in Office Technology and Management in Polytechnics in North Central States. Based on the findings of the study, the researcher recommended among others that: Institutions engaged in online training should provide adequate e-learning hardware resources for training in Office Technology and Management in Polytechnics in North Central States; appropriate e-learning software resources such as application software should be provided for effective teaching and learning in Office Technology and Management in Polytechnics in North Central State. Being that all activities of any enterprise are initiated and determined by the human capital that make up that enterprise, qualified and adequate human resources should be engaged for teaching and learning in Office Technology and Management in Polytechnics in North Central States.

Assessment of leadership performance on service delivery in Ilorin East Government Area, Kwara State, Nigeria

The study examined the leadership performance on service delivery in Ilorin East local government. The paper adopted behavioural theory championed by Watson. The survey research method. 300 respondents were sampled using purposive and simple random sampling techniques and total numbers of 292 questionnaires were retrieved. The questionnaire was analyzed using the SPSS Version 20. The questionnaires were analyzed using simple percentage. Findings from the study showed that the majority of the respondents (46.2%) disagreed that Ilorin East Local Government is allowed to exercise her discretion and undertake competitive personnel administration and revealed that majority (83.2%) of the respondents agreed that the financial autonomy of Ilorin east local government is being severely intervened in by the state government through the instrumentation of the State Joint Local Government Account. Finding also revealed that the majority of the respondents (61.3%) disagreed that there is no provision for rural water supply and extension of urban water supply by the local government authority and that the majority of the respondents (63%) disagreed that there are standard primary schools in Ilorin east local government. The paper recommended that high degree of autonomy should be enshrined in Nigerian Constitution for Local Governments, there should be attitudinal change among those who operate the institutions of government at both the state and local government levels and the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies should be more proactive to equip Local Government functionaries with requisite training that would ultimately reflect in the formulation and implementation of government policies and programmes in Ilorin East local Government in particular and Nigeria in General.

Unveiling sustainable architecture: Challenges, prospects, and collaborative solutions in Nigeria

This study delves into the challenges and potential of sustainable architecture in Nigeria, focusing on assessing awareness, knowledge, and utilization levels. The research reviews existing literature on sustainable architecture in the country and employs a survey methodology. A structured open-ended questionnaire was designed and distributed among educational institutions, explicitly targeting the School of Environmental Studies, resulting in a 90% response rate. Employing a systematic approach, the study aims to uncover valuable insights and interpretations. It seeks to identify critical barriers hindering the adoption of sustainable architecture, assess the role of regulations and standards in driving its promotion, and explore opportunities for collaborative efforts among architects, builders, and stakeholders in advancing sustainable architecture in Nigeria. The study's findings hold promise in shedding light on challenges and potential remedies for promoting sustainable architecture within Nigeria. By addressing these barriers and deploying strategic solutions, Nigeria can progress towards a more sustainable built environment. Furthermore, this research contributes to the global discourse on sustainable architecture by presenting a compelling case study of its implementation within a developing nation. Through its comprehensive approach, this study offers valuable insights and practical recommendations to enhance sustainable architectural practices in Nigeria and beyond.

Effect of public projects abandonment on clients and host communities: A study of Idah Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria

This paper is an assessment of the effects of abandonment of public projects on the clients and the supposed beneficiary (the host community). Nigeria has a colossal phenomenon of abandoned public projects scattered all over the federation resulting in the denial of the intended benefit of such projects to Nigerians if completed and functional. Projects are initiated to meet human need. Their eventual abandonment should obviously have adverse effects on the client, contractors, consultants, the construction industry and the society at large. Therefore, this paper assessed factors responsible for the abandonment of public projects, especially building projects and their effects on the client and the communities in Idah Local Government Area of Kogi State, considering the large size of the population. The study adopts Taro Yamani's sample size formula to select 1000 respondents out of which 900 respondents completed and returned the questionnaires distributed to them. The data obtained from the questionnaire was statistically analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) method. It was discovered among other things, that factors such as payment remittance delay, instability in leadership and improper project planning were responsible for project abandonment. It is, therefore, recommended among others that to forestall future public project abandonment, there should be an innovative planning and best practices of project management, excellent time phasing and policy of zero tolerance for project abandonment amongst other recommendations.

An appraisal of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in public service organizations in Nigeria: A case study of Federal Polytechnic, Idah, Kogi State, Nigeria

The Formal Sector Social Health Insurance Programme (FSSHIP) is one of the cardinal programmes of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) targeted at providing qualitative and cost-effective health care services to employees in the public and organized private sectors, respectively. This study, therefore, empirically examines the level of awareness and the enrollment rate (rate of participation) of the staff of The Federal Polytechnic, Idah, Kogi State. North Central Nigeria, pertaining to the Formal Sector Health Insurance Programme (FSSHIP). The study also explores the extent to which staff of the institution are satisfied with the quality and cost-effectiveness of health services provided under the programme. The study adopts the descriptive cross-sectional survey research design which involves the administration of fixed-choice questionnaires to 162 randomly sampled staff of the institution. Consequently, the data elicited from the questionnaires were mainly analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study reveals that the awareness level about the Formal Sector Social Health Insurance Programme (FSSHIP) among staff of the institution is low. Also, the study shows that majority of the sampled staff of the institution are not enrolled in the FSSHIP. The study, therefore, concludes that the qualitative and cost-effective health services provided under the FSSHIP would be of little impact if a significant proportion of those covered by the programme do not actively participate in it due to low level of awareness and enlightenment about the programme. To this end, the study leveraged on the political systems theory, to recommend, among others, the need for major stake holders in the FSSHIP, to interface with staff of the institution through various interactive forums in order to raise their awareness levels, and enrollment rate in the programme.

Mediating effect of employees' commitment on talent retention and academic staff performance in state-owned tertiary institutions

The success of any organization hinges on the performance of its employees. Consequently, the underperformance of academic staff in state-owned tertiary institutions in Kogi State, Nigeria, has raised significant concerns due to its adverse impact on institutional performance. Drawing upon the Social Exchange Theory (SET) and a comprehensive literature review, it is hypothesized that employees’ commitment serves as a potential mediator between talent retention and employee performance. However, extant literature lacks sufficient exploration of the mediating role of employees’ commitment in the connection between talent retention and employee performance. Addressing this knowledge gap, this study investigates the mediating effect of employees’ commitment on the relationship between talent retention and the performance of academic staff in state-owned tertiary institutions within Kogi State, Nigeria. Employing a proportionate stratified sampling technique, 485 questionnaires were distributed, and subsequent analysis focused on 408 collected responses using PLS-SEM path modeling with the aid of the SMARTPLS2 statistical software package. Our findings affirm that there exists a significant positive relationship between talent retention and the performance of academic staff in the sampled tertiary institutions. Furthermore, statistical analysis confirms that employees’ commitment mediates the relationship between talent retention and academic staff performance in these institutions. Therefore, the study suggests that managerial efforts within Kogi State’s tertiary institutions should prioritize the proper retention of talented employees.
