Abstract
AbstractIlse Aichinger’s novel Die größere Hoffnung was published in Russian in 1998 in the framework of the project Austrian library in St. Petersburg. The translator Elena Baevskaja is famous for her translations of French and German prose. The focus here is on the following topics: 1) the Jewish theme of the novel and its relevance for the Russian reader; 2) the rendering of recurring words and images (leitmotifs) in the novel; 3) the translation of images and lexemes concerning culturally and historically bound notions; 4) word play and other complicated cases; 5) examples of text explanation through translation.
