Abstract
Abstract The article takes a starting point from two contrasting views in literary research on Arno Schmidt’s relation to the public sphere: Schmidt is, on the one hand, depicted as a solitary writer withdrawn from the public; he is, on the other hand, portrayed as a public provocateur and literary strategist. The article turns to his prose and examines how the problems of the public sphere are reflected in one of Arno Schmidt’s narratives: In 'Goethe und Einer seiner Bewunderer', the article argues, the limits and possibilities of writing after 1945 are tested.
