Abstract
The article is devoted to the reconstruction of the historical experience of the activities of the tsarist gendarmes, who performed the functions of the “supreme police”, aimed at organizing the secret collection of information about the lifestyle, service and behavior in society of the commanders of garrison battalions of a Separate Internal Guard Corps, endowed with extensive powers to protect order, catch criminals and pacify unlawful acts. The peculiarity of the topic under consideration is the extremely small elaboration of the problems of organizing secret surveillance within the system of police institutions created to protect statehood.
