Abstract

The biography of Vladimir G. Certkov (1854-1936) is delineated here on the basis of archive sources. This outline accounts for the different roles he played in the life of the great Russian writer Lev N. Tolstoy. V.G. Certkov was the main interpreter of his moral doctrine, the so-called tolstoyism. He drafted, published and translated his writings, was his photographer, the director of his Complete Works (1928-1858) and perhaps the closer person to him in life. This life profile is only a preliminary contribution to the history of the friendship between Lev Tolstoj e Vladimir Certkov, one of the most intense and mysterious pages in the life of the great Russian writer, full of implications still being investigated.
