Abstract
The natural monazite Ce x La y PO 4·(ThO 2) z , LaPO 4 and CePO 4 samples were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The criteria allowing one to distinguish between a mechanical mixture and a compound were established. These criteria are the set of Δ E i parameters (Δ E i : the differences of binding energies) and changes of the chemical composition after ion bombardment.
