Abstract

Uncovering the influence of Xi Jinping on the Chinese political economy is an important academic task. To achieve this, we focus on the Database of Xi Jinping's Important Speech Series, introducing its data characteristics, usage considerations, and examples of analysis. The database is composed mainly of articles from People’s Daily and Xinhua News Agency. An exercise in reverse engineering confirmed that Xi Jinping’s personal daily activities are collected in the database. Keyword search results suggest that the Database of Xi Jinping's Important Speech Series reflects Xi Jinping's personal intentions at an earlier stage compared to the People's Daily. In recent years, empirical studies using the database have emerged. Despite limitations in content, size, and duration, we argue that the database has value as a source of frequent and high-dimensional data for empirical studies on the Chinese political economy.
