Abstract

Who were the xenoi frequently mentioned by Diodorus Siculus in his account of the revolt of the mercenaries in south-eastern Sicily around the middle of the Vth century B.C. ? Were they Greeks from other cities ? Or Barbarians ? One tries here to demonstrate, studying the peculiarities of certain grave goods of Gela, that these mercenaries were not Greeks, but Barbarians whose greater part had come from Campania since the beginning of the fifth century B.C.
