Abstract

Acute infection of the central nervous system (CNS) is a serious diagnostic and therapeutic problem. It is a potentially life-threatening condition, therefore any suspected central nervous system infection requires urgent diagnosis. The etiology of CNS infection is diverse and depends on many elements. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination confirms the infection of the CNS and identifies the causative agent. The available diagnostic methods have their limitations. Molecular tests, including the use of comprehensive molecular panels, such as Film Array Meningitis/Encephalitis, facilitate the precise diagnosis of the etiological factor, but they cannot and should not replace routine CSF tests, but should complement them.
