Abstract
Speaking culture is an essential quality of every cultured person. It is a civilization attainment, a part of both culture of living and culture of thinking. Reading as a consequence of a person's cultural development is in contemporary world a necessary skill for existence and a significant way of communicating and transferring knowledge. The paper is, first and foremost, about reading as a vital social ability that is, considering the development course contemporary civilization is taking, in crisis, and still it is an important requirement for general social development. A reading crisis, first of all, generates consequences in teaching that is directly related to books, literature and speaking culture that is based on it. It will be examined in this paper how literature teaching, most importantly work on literary-artistic texts, could contribute to the speaking culture development of the students in the lower classes of primary school.
