Abstract
The phenomenon of the reading crisis in Russia at the end of the 20th – beginning of the 21st centuries is considered and the reasons for its occurrence, including the «fragmentation» of the reading public, the peculiarities of reading in the electronic environment, the reduction in the number of «masters of thought» among writers, conflicting assessments of the modern literary process, the policy of book publishing, the teaching of literature at school, the state of public libraries, the sociocultural situation, the influence of the market economics and the specifics of postmodern reality. The most common hypotheses and points of view explaining the current situation are analyzed. It is concluded that the reading crisis is a systemic problem affecting various aspects of society. It can be overcome only by combining the efforts of specialists from different specialties, summarizing existing points of view and avoiding categorical assessments of the situation.
