Abstract

Dear Reader, This note is my self-introduction to the readers of Journal of Emerging Technologies in Web Intelligence (JETWI). First, I would like to welcome you all to this JETWI inaugural issue. The field of our endeavours is all matters related to Web Intelligence in its broadest sense. This includes, of course, the Emerging Web Technologies, Artificial Intelligence Systems, Communications and Networking Systems (including mobile, pervasive, P2P, Grid) and applications of Web Intelligence systems and their interfacing. JETWI aims to achieve a scholarly balance between emerging technologies (e.g. Ubiquitous Computing, Web-Oriented Architectures, Ambient Intelligence, Mashups, Web Intelligence, Semantic Web, and Multi Agent Technologies, Cloud Computing, etc.) and the direction in which the web is developing (e.g. Web 2.0, Social Web, Web 3.0 and Web Mining, etc). Actually, the Web Intelligence (WI) research area is undergoing a rapid expansion and is quickly becoming fundamental to the new directions being taken by the Artificial Intelligence, Advanced Information Technology, Web and Agent Intelligence scientific communities. According to WIC 1 , “ WI aims to explore the fundamental roles as well as practical impacts of Artificial Intelligence (AI) (e.g., knowledge representation, planning, knowledge discovery and data mining, intelligent agents, and social network intelligence) and advanced Information Technology (IT) (e.g., wireless networks, ubiquitous devices, social networks, wisdom Web, and data/knowledge grids) on the next generation of Web-empowered products, systems, services, and activities .” With such new research trends, the Web is very different now. During the last few years, huge volumes of data have been collected and made widely available with variety of notable conferences, journals, magazines and on the Internet. There is an imminent need to turn the huge volume of data into knowledge. In response to such a grand challenge, JETWI is committed to deepening the understanding on these issues and trends to develop knowledge in and around the Emerging Technologies for Web Intelligence. JETWI is a peer-reviewed international journal, which publishes 4 issues a year, in both electronic and hard copies. The primary target audience for JETWI includes researchers, scholars, postgraduate students and developers who are interested in Web intelligence and Emerging Technologies research and related issues. The journal features high-quality original research papers, extended conference papers and the rising scholar’s papers. Submissions of previously published papers in conference proceedings are eligible for consideration provided that the author informs the Editor at the time of submission and that the submission has undergone substantial revision. The rising scholar’s paper is one way to encourage publishing graduate student’s research (e.g. MSc, PhD). It is a short paper that provides in depth research examination of the state of the art in an area covered by JETWI research scope. The rising scholar paper author should demonstrate a critical perspective of the area, and awareness of open problems and research opportunities. Although the rising scholar paper authors may not themselves have contributed to the area, they should be as informed and analytical as those who work in it. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to the Editorial Board Members for their sustained support to make the launch of this new journal possible. Certainly we could not publish an outstanding journal without the extraordinary efforts of our reviewers. The willingness and expertise of the professionals who serve as reviewers are essential to maintaining technical and editorial standards. So it is with great appreciation and gratitude that I offer my thanks to each of the peer reviewers whose efforts help to ensure that this journal becomes one of the promising new Computer Science and Engineering journals. In particular, I would like to thank Dr. George Sun of the Academy Publisher, whose trust at the very beginning allows us to move the journal forward. Through the Academy Publisher, we will assure state-of-the-art benefits of a modern electronic publication. I heartily believe that we will soon receive a growing number of quality research papers from authors around the world. I hope that our new Journal of Emerging Technologies in Web Intelligence will expand in the future and we will be able to accommodate the steady influx of manuscripts assuring progress, high quality and success. I look forward to a successful and rewarding first year of the journal as Editor-in-Chief and welcome any comments or suggestions you might have on how we can continue to improve our journal. Sabah Mohammed Editor-in-Chief August 2009
