Abstract
Pathways into Medieval Comparative Literary Studies. With a Methodological Outlook Based on Religious Plays The literary traditions of the Middle Ages were interconnected across territorial and linguistic borders. Although there is general agreement that for this reason a comparative perspective is inscribed in medieval studies by virtue of its subject matter, there is still no ›medieval comparative literary studies‹. The article identifies central reasons for this desideratum, the lack of theoretical and methodological foundations in particular, and proposes four methods from textual analysis that can be used for medieval comparative inquiries on the basis of a semiotic approach. It thus aims to show perspectives for the foundation of medieval comparative literary studies, which must be achieved in collective work by scholars from all medieval literary fields.
