Abstract

The custom of pilgrimage is widespread all over the world, e.g. Kumbh Mela in India, Hajj in Saudi Arabia. These are the peaceful gatherings wherein, millions of people from all corners of the world come to perform their holy rituals. However, during these events, pilgrims getting lost in the crowd, medical emergencies and stampede are likely to happen. In such incidents, authorities involved in the crowd management face difficulties in identifying and locating the lost, the injured, the ill or the dead person. Therefore, there is always delay in reaching the medical help to the needy person. This paper presents a real-time pilgrim tracking and health monitoring system that has been designed and implemented using Arduino in order to help the authority solve this problem. A wearable unit is provided to each pilgrim for sensing the location and vital health parameters of that person. The authority in the control room is connected to the wearable unit using Global system for mobile communication. The significance of this system is to pilgrims as well as to the authority. The pilgrims can call for help when needed. The visual display of the pilgrims' data is available on the computer for the authority in the control room. Adverse health is indicated through the alert message on the GUI. Additionally, there are provisions for informing the relatives through short message service and maintaining records of the data of pilgrims for reference.
