Abstract

The effects of influencing factors at the dry sliding interface are essential in bio tribology, as the study on consequences of wear mechanism under wet condition. The gamma (γ) irradiated Ultra High Molecular Weight Poly Ethylene (UHMWPE) hybrid polymer bio composite for orthopaedic implants has been considered for analysing the complex wear mechanism against the bio ceramic TiN surface. The SEM morphology and the surface profile of the worn surface had confirmed that miscellaneous wear mechanisms occurred at the interface. The wear maps clearly indicate the combined effects of these factors and their relative influences on the wear behaviour of the tribopair. The correlation and distinction between the surface roughness (Ra) and the wear depth to the Coefficient Of Friction (COF) and the specific wear rate in the dry sliding wear phenomenon have been demonstrated.
