Abstract

Unless the maximum wave run-up, R^ax o** the face of a seawall is greater than the freeboard of the structure, R , then there is no overtopping (apart from wind-blown spray). This condition is satisfied in a new theoretical model of random wave overtopping developed by Hedges and Reis*. The minimum seawall freeboards necessary, according to the new model, to limit the mean overtopping rate per unit length of seawall, Q, to specified values are compared with the freeboards predicted by Owen's well-known and oftenused expression (HRŜ ). Owen's relationship does not satisfy the condition in which Q = 0 unless R^ax >Rc The differences in the predicted freeboards for the overtopping discharges associated with normal design conditions are investigated in this paper.
