Abstract
ABSTRACT It is widely believed that modern Ethiopian education began with the opening of Menilek II School in Addis Ababa in 1908 and thereafter spread to other parts of the country. Scholars take this perception for granted and remain reluctant to conduct further investigations into schools before Emperor Menilek II. However, there is historical evidence that modern education was started in Wallaggaa at Boojjii Karkarroo Village in Boojjii Dirmajii Sub District in 1898, almost a decade before that of Menilek II. Therefore, this article investigates Wallaggaa as the epicentre of modern schools and its effects on the nation. Swedish Evangelical Missionaries began early modern education in Wallaggaa at Boojjii Dirmajii in 1898. With the sponsorship of the missionaries and the protection of the local administrators, the school influenced the Ethiopian education system’s modernisation process.
