Abstract

The paper presents methodological and theoretical approaches to a comparative orientation in research on educational organizations. Because educational organizations have not been the subject of systematic comparative research up to now, the authors draw on approaches of comparative organizational research and international comparative education studies. The paper first examines the function and systematization and problems of self-reflection in comparative research. Next, the approaches of educational borrowing and lending and neo-institutionalism, as used in comparative organizational research, are critically discussed with regard to their applicability to educational organizations. Finally, a summary of core criteria for comparative research on educational organizations follows.
