Abstract

A varve is a demonstrably annual lacustrine or marine sedimentary deposit that is composed of at least to laminae differing from each other by their physical and chemical properties. Varves provide a good method of dating past events. Because the deposition of sediment is related to environmental processes that are ultimately controlled by climate, the physical, chemical, or biological characteristics of a varved record provide a good proxy for past climatic and environmental changes.
