Abstract

Abstract Strong nonlinearity of P-value vs concentration in the system of ferroelectric liquid crystals has been found. The region of the nonlinear behaviour of P correlates with the narrowing of Sm A phase and emergence of the N* phase. It has been shown that P4 in Sm C* phase is proportional to the width of the Sm A range 𝒹(TNA - TAC)/TNA at fixed reduced temperature. Phase diagram features are discussed in terms of the Landau theory considering the interaction of the Sm C* order parameter and orientational and translational order parameters describing N and Sm A phases. It has been shown that for a narrow temperature range of N* phase a tricritical point might appear on the A - C* phase transition line if the latter is near the N*-A phase transition line.
