Abstract

The field equations of the Brans-Dicke theory are solved for a vacuum with the aid of a space-time metric of Friedmann type. Nonstatic solutions are found showing that, in general, a Birkhoff theorem does not exist for the Brans-Dicke theory. Solutions are also found which may be interpreted as being contrary to Mach’s principle.
