Abstract
ABSTRACT Paintings depicting elements of the natural environment can be an effective educational tool, useful for teachers at every educational stage. The article discusses the use of figurative painting in teaching about environmental hazards. For this purpose, eight paintings were selected, each depicting a different environmental hazard impact – hurricane, flood, earthquake and volcano eruption. Each painting was then examined for its content and depicted elements. Based on the research, it can be concluded that paintings depicting environmental hazards are an important source of knowledge in geographical studies, and can teach about various processes and their effects in space. The introduction of the use of paintings in the educational process can help understand and appreciate art, and also demonstrate that it can be an educational tool in geography or other empirical sciences.
