Abstract

Instrumentation and measurement technology embrace undoubtedly the techniques which offer various attractive features like non-invasive use. Ultrasonic sensors are adorned with this quality and hence offer most of the measurements non-invasively. The applications of ultrasonic sensors broadly classified into three categories viz power ultrasonic tools; signal processing devices and ultrasonic instruments exploiting ultrasonic frequency stress waves, are given here for the measurement of various physical parameters. Based upon one or more variabilities of these categories, ultrasonic sensors are used in the chemical and process industries. The ultrasonic measurements of flow rate, temperature, liquid level, density concentration of solutions and dispersions, liquid/liquid interface position, viscosity, pressure, thickness, etc are briefly described alongwith the basic principles and techniques involved.
