Abstract

Results from the commercial application of advanced low NO, burners (LNBs) to nine electric utility boilers are presented. The utility boilers are operated by Commonwealth Edison Company, Southern California Edison Company, the City of Glendale, and the City of Burbank. The boilers' capacities range from 20 MW to 575 MW. In most applications, the low NOx combustion systems incorporate flue gas recirculation (FGR) and/or overfire air ports (OFA). Interaction between burner and furnace design and their impact on NOx emissions is discussed. Correlations are presented for the dependence of thermal NOx formation on furnace geometry.
