Abstract

Universal design (UD) has a rich history that began with making commercial products and architecture more useable by everyone, including people with disabilities. The UD in Education (UDE) Framework guides the design of informal and formal learning opportunities so that they are inclusive of all students. This chapter includes historical highlights, a comparison of accommodation and UD approaches for making education accessible to students with disabilities, the UDE Framework, and specific UDE practices in educational opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
