Mobile banking is a service provided by banks to provide value and convenience to both banks and customers. However, the successful implementation of mobile banking largely depends on how much customers are fully motivated to adopt it. Thus, this study recognizes the need to examine the factors that could predict the use of mobile banking and how using such a system could contribute to increasing the intensity of use of mobile banking by customers. The conceptual model of this study uses extended UTAUT2, including price value, hedonic motivation, and habit. Data collection was carried out through a questionnaire survey by 137 respondents. Partial least square-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed for analyzing the data. The study showed that behavioral intention and habit are significantly and positively influenced by hedonic motivation. Meanwhile, use behavior is significantly and positively influenced by habit and behavioral intention. Nonetheless, price value was found to have a negative and insignificant impact on behavioral intention to use mobile banking. The conclusion derived from this study enhances the understanding of the factors determining the use of mobile banking in West Sumatra.

Cultural Factors as Powerful Moderators of Romanian Students’ Adoption of Mobile Banking in Everyday Life
 • Jan 1, 2020
 • Valentin Mihai Leoveanu + 2 more

The purpose of this research is represented by the need to highlight the trend regarding the access and use of mobile banking and mobile payment services by student consumers, in close connection with the cultural factors that can influence this trend. In this regard, the paper considers aspects such as observing the students’ behavior regarding how mobile banking is used in the monitoring of bank accounts, taking financial decisions about saving and investments, as well as shopping. The research methodology addressed aimed at both qualitative and quantitative research, considering the mobile financial services offered by banks operating in Romania. The authors conducted a quantitative research based on a questionnaire, grouping selectively a multitude of questions on how students perceive mobile banking according to the specific interaction they had with it. The structural model that was used is called the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2), a combination of UTAUT developed in 2003 by Venkatesh et al. and Hofstede’s cultural moderators. The qualitative analysis considered the placement of the factors analyzed in a cultural context linked with the Romanian students, trying to investigate the values, perceptions, desires, but also the stereotypes and prejudices taken from the family or other social organisms. The results of this research reveal how cultural factors determine the Romanian students attitude close to the use of mobile banking services. Factors that have a positive influence on behavioral intention are performance, facilitating conditions and habit. Habit has also a positive influence on use behaviour. Social influence has a negative effect on behavioral intention. There is no relationship between behavioral intention and effort expectancy, hedonic motivation and price value. Also, there is no association between use behavior and behavior intention. All cultural moderators signal a negative influence on the behavioral intention - use behavior relationship.

 • Journal of Enterprise Information Management
 • Mohamad Merhi + 3 more

PurposeDespite the benefits of mobile banking services in an increasingly digitised world, adoption rates remain unsatisfactory. The present cross-national study examines age- and gender-dependent variations of consumer intentions and use of mobile banking services.Design/methodology/approachThe study analyses consumer mobile banking use by integrating factors such as with trust, security and privacy and it examines the effects of these factors among two demographic factors including age and gender. 897 Lebanese and British mobile banking users completed a survey. Data was analysed by partial least squares-structural equations modelling.FindingsConsumer behavioural intention was significantly moderated by age through its relationship with facilitating conditions and trust among Lebanese respondents, and performance expectancy, effort expectancy, hedonic motivation, price value and habit among their British counterparts. As for gender, a significant moderating effect was evidenced in the Lebanese, but not the British sample, on the level of performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, price value and perceived security.Originality/valueThe findings provide evidence of the applicability of the new factors proposed in this research. The reflection of the influence of these demographic factors in a cross-national context provides insights into mobile banking adoption variation between different countries.

Determinant of M-Banking Usage and Adoption among Millennials
 • May 18, 2023

 • Mo’Men Awad Al Tarawneh + 3 more

Mobile banking has the benefits of internet banking, in which the customer can access bank services over an internet connection anytime and anywhere. Millennials in Malaysia’s business environment are an enormous segment of the Malaysian population, and they are moving to take their places in the middle and high levels of their companies’ managerial governance pyramid these days and in the near future. This study examines the question, “What are the main factors that may influence mobile banking use (MBU) and the intention to use mobile banking (IU) among millenial consumers in Malaysia?”. The determining factors of UTAUT, performance expectancy (PE), effort expectancy (EE), social influence (SI), facilitating conditions (FC), hedonic motivation (HM), price value (PV), habit (Ha), perceived risk (PDR), and interface design quality (IDQ) were tested in this study. Method: SPSS and PLS-SEM are employed on a collected sample of 504 respondents of Millennials in Malaysia using a well-defined questionnaire to carry out all statistical analyses of this study. Result: The study model can explain 55.3% of the variance of mobile banking use (MBU) and 60.3% of the intention to use mobile banking (IU). In this study, all the relations of the model are significant, except the relation between price value (PV) and the intention to use mobile banking. For both IU and MBU in the model, the factor “Interface design quality” (IDQ) has the highest impact. In contrast, the factor “Perceived Risk” (PDR) has the lowest impact. The findings of this study extend the knowledge on mobile banking as an approach of financial technology implementation, from which mobile banking providers and interface designers can provide new potential solutions to expand the usage of mobile banking services in Malaysia. This study proposed a modified model with eleven variables. While the designed model was evaluated successfully and explained 55% of actual use and 60% of intentional use, the remaining portion (45% for actual use and 40% for intended usage) exposes yet other factors that are still unrevealed. Therefore, further studies are required to assess the design in various other financial sectors, and further studies are invited to conduct qualitative research to reveal other variables for a better understanding of the intention and actual use of mobile banking.

 • International Journal of Asian Social Science
 • Damir Becirovic + 3 more

The purpose of this work is to show the development and evaluation of behavioural intentions of students by using mobile banking. The research goal is to explain determinants of students’ intentions towards the use of mobile banking. PLS SEM (partial least squares structural equation modeling) analysis was used for the model evaluation. The sample consists of 83 students from four higher education institutions operating in Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H). Research results confirmed that subjective norm and attitude are significant predictors of the user’s attitude towards mobile banking acceptance, while the influence of self-efficacy was not determined. Attitudes related to mobile banking acceptance are primarily determined by perception of usefulness and self-efficacy, and to a lower degree by perception of privacy and security risk. Perception of mobile banking usefulness appeared to be the most significant predictor of attitudes, while simultaneously it influenced positively on acceptance of behavioral intention, including intervening effect of attitude variable. Digital literacy was proved to be a significant predictor for self-efficacy. From the perspective of banks, it is very important to see how a generation that a high potential for the use of modern technologies has perceives mobile banking, and what affects it to accept mobile banking. The results of this research are useful for banks to attract new younger users of mobile banking and increase their own benefits.

Moderating effects of perceived risk on the determinants–outcome nexus of e-money behaviour
 • Oct 22, 2020
 • International Journal of Emerging Markets
 • Perengki Susanto + 4 more

PurposeIn recent years, the usage rate of electronic money (e-money) has grown rapidly in many countries around the world and is becoming widely accepted in developing nations due to evolving market conditions and buying patterns. This study explores the determinants of customers' behavioural intention (BI) and actual usage behaviour (UB) of e-money service in a transition economic setting. Additionally, since there has been limited research on moderating influences, this study introduces perceived risk (PR) as a moderator, underpinned by relevant technology acceptance and behavioural theories.Design/methodology/approachThe proposed model and hypothesised variable relationships are tested using partial least squares-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) with survey data from 337 e-money service users in Indonesia.FindingsThe empirical results revealed that facilitating conditions (FCs), hedonic motivation (HM), price value (PV), habit (HT) and PR are important determinants of customers’ BI towards e-money and most of these variables also affect actual UB of e-money services. Performance expectancy (PE), effort expectancy (EE) and social influence (SI) emerged to be insignificant determinants. The study also uncovered that PR negatively moderates the links between EE, SI, HM, PV and BI towards e-money services. Likewise, PR has an adverse effect on the BI–actual UB relationship.Research limitations/implicationsA large portion of the sample comprised young individuals with tertiary education. In essence, the sample represents the millennial generation and they are generally characterised as responsive, innovative and technology literate. Future studies could advance the present understanding by comparing different customer backgrounds and country.Practical implicationsThe results shed light into the key factors that enhance e-money usage behaviours and have direct managerial implications with regard to brand strategy and market targeting. The findings imply that e-money service providers should take initiatives to retain users with effective and personalised marketing efforts, particularly via mobile media brand promotions.Originality/valueWhile there has been considerable discussion on how PR may impact on initial preference and adoption of e-money, existing studies seem to fall short in conceptualising and empirically examining the moderating role of PR on the determinants and outcome of e-money BI.
