Abstract
Recently ultrasonic welding (USW) technique have emerged as a viable alternative method for the joining of fiber reinforced polymer composites (FRPCs). It is more cost‐efficient as opposed to the conventional adhesive, mechanical and other joining methods. The objective of this paper is to provide a deeper insight into the recent development of the USW technique for thermoplastic composites (TPCs) to TPCs, and to thermoset composites (TSCs). The focus of the review is set on the equipment, process, parameters and application that govern the USW technology. The welding parameters and types of energy director (ED) are looked at in detail. In addition, several large-scale USW technologies and industrial applications that involve USW of aviation composite are systematically summarized. Continuous ultrasonic welding (CUSW) is briefly introduced as one of the most promising methods in the end.
