Abstract

A double side surface strengthening method based on ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT) was developed to improve fatigue behaviors of titanium open hole structures. The surface property after strengthening was characterized. The surface strain under quasi-static load was analyzed by a 2D-DIC method, moreover, fatigue behaviors were also tested. The results showed that the hardness and microstructural characteristics were significantly improved by the strengthening method. The surface strain along tensile direction was restricted by the strengthened surface, while the strain level perpendicular to tensile direction increased after strengthening. As expected, an obvious increasing in fatigue life of strengthened specimens was observed, and the fatigue crack propagation was delayed by the strengthening. Specially, the optimal fatigue performance was generated by the combination strengthening of UIT and polishing.
