Partindo de uma data paradigmática, 1890, quando a Inglaterra envia um Ultimatum à coroa portuguesa para que se retire de certas áreas da África Central, a autora analisa de forma crítica a geopolítica desenvolvida pela Inglaterra e a geoestratégia não só de Lisboa, mas igualmente dos participantes no comércio de longa distância. Aborda ainda o papel das missões protestantes, uma questão chave para o entendimento das formações políticas do Planalto de Angola
