Abstract
This paper illustrates on two examples of practical significance the usefulness of the crack kinking analysis pioneered by Sia Nemat-Nasser and his colleagues. The first example deals with the calculation of the pull-out force of axisymmetric headed anchors embedded deep in concrete blocks and the second with the interaction between the crack deflection and phase transformation mechanisms of toughening in ceramics containing dispersed tetragonal zirconia precipitates.
