Abstract
Seven university students, one male and six female, participated in this study, which did not aim to examine the perception of intimate partner violence (IPV) among Turkish and Czech university students. In the study, the possible effects of IPV on university students, the sources of IPV, the types of IPV students are exposed to, the level of awareness of students about IPV, and the effect of gender on the perception of IPV were examined. The research data collected through interviews were analysed with inductive content analysis. In the study, the similarities between the views of Czech and Turkish students on IPV were examined, the codes created using the interview transcripts were combined into sub-themes and associated with the four themes of the study: Sources of Intimate Partner Violence, Types of Intimate Partner Violence, Being aware of Intimate Partner Violence, and Effects of Gender on Students’ Perception. The results suggest that there are mostly similarities between Czech and Turkish students in terms of views on IPV, and the influence of the culture they live in when differences are observed. While female students mostly judged men as having a male-dominated perspective, the only male participant of the study stated that some of the problems stemmed from the female nature. When all the results are evaluated together, it can be said that this study may shed light on the source of disagreements between couples and contribute to the relevant literature on Intimate Partner Violence.
