Abstract

Besides widespread use of the antibiotics for treatment of infectious diseases in both humans and animals, their unregulated disposal has become a major threat to the environment in several aspects like emergence of antibiotic resistance in microorganisms, hindered growth of healthy gut microbiome, and toxicity in humans and animals upon accumulation. Therefore, the need of development of selective and sensitive methods is highly desirable for rapid detection of antibiotics. Nowadays, optical biosensors have been emerged as relatively rapid, easy to use, and accurate approach as an alternative to conventional detection techniques. Here, the recent advancements in point-of-care (POC) optical biosensing platforms are highlighted for on-site detection of antibiotics in terms of affordable and user-friendly manner. The POC devices can be easily integrated with advanced systems such as intelligent or internet of things (IoT).
