Abstract
The focus of the present study is the comparison between the feature film Camp de Thiaroye (1987) and its Italian version (IV) (1988), from the point of view of a phenomenon treated in the screenplay: plurilingualism and linguistic variations. Comparison of the dialogues of the original version (OV) and the IV shows the omission of some languages in the OV, subtitled in the IV instead. Also, the ‘français tiralleur’ speech was well adapted in the IV, suggesting a better adherence of the IV to the political-aesthetic programme of Sembène.
Highlights
Crime fiction in South Africa has exploded after the demise of apartheid in 1994, as many scholars have noted
Notwithstanding their different re-elaboration of the tropes of the detective stories, I argue that both Dhlomo and the Drum writer resorted to this productive strand of popular fiction to reassert a claim to knowledge denied to Africans before and after the institutionalisation of apartheid, saturating their texts with new local meanings and exceeding Western genre conventions
The refashioning of the Bildungsroman genre cannot be achieved without a proper inclusion in the family frame, leading to ‘coming-of-age narratives’ or ‘novels of transformation’ which are full of social and political implications, both within and beyond the boundaries of their specific cultural traditions
Summary
In Memoriam Anna Zoppellari (1959-2021) Fulvia Ardenghi, Alessandro Costantini, Francesca Todesco 367. Lamine Rhimi proposes to see the hybridisation of literary genres that characterises Glissant’s prose as a narrative example of his Poetics of Relation and uses the expression maronnage rhétorique to define the Antillean author’s rejection of any imperialistic categorisation
