Abstract

The outbreak of influenza, commonly known as flu, is something we prepare for in general practice in September each year. We are aware that influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by specific viruses, but how much more do we know about it? The difference between influenza and the common cold is confused by our patients, as the symptoms do overlap ( Prior et al, 2011 ). It is, therefore, important to be able to differentiate whether a patient is presenting with influenza or the common cold, as influenza can be a serious condition in at-risk groups. Management of patients with influenza in the at-risk groups is dependent on early diagnosis and treatment with antivirals. There is also general advice we can give patients about the management of their symptoms. The best course of treatment is prevention of the disease through vaccination and education. This article provides an overview of the treatment and prevention of influenza.
