Abstract

This article will review the current evidence for the treatment and management of osteoarthritis (OA). OA is the most common musculoskeletal condition worldwide and patients will seek advice regarding management options from a number of healthcare providers including GPs, nurses, physiotherapists and pharmacists. There is no cure for OA, but there are effective treatments. This article will explain what OA is, the symptoms associated with structural changes to the joint and how OA is diagnosed. The effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions including patient education, exercise and weight management will be explored. The role of medications including paracetamol, topical and oral non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs will be included. The article will conclude by discussing when surgical intervention is advisable.
