Abstract

Each autumn, general practice prepares for the outbreak of influenza. Patients are often confused about the difference between influenza and the common cold as the symptoms overlap ( Prior et al, 2011 ). It is, therefore, important that health professionals are able to determine whether a patient is presenting with influenza or the common cold, as influenza can be a serious condition in at-risk groups. The management of patients with influenza in at-risk groups is dependent on early diagnosis and treatment with antivirals. Health professionals can give self-management advice to those who are at a low risk of complications. The best approach to the flu season is through vaccination and education. This article provides an overview of the treatment and prevention of influenza.
