Abstract
ABSTRACT This paper looks at twelve (inter)national classifications of occupations, analyzing the occupational image of translators they suggest. Classifications of occupations provide one source of information for those pondering on their future careers and are also used in vocational counseling. Their hierarchical structure implies similarities between occupations positioned in the same group, thus contributing to the image formed in individuals’ minds. The analysis shows that the aspects brought to the fore vary in the twelve classifications considered in this article: while some position translators among language professionals (‘linguists’), others see them as media and communication professionals or workers, emphasizing artistic and communication aspects of the job. Translators are also placed among social professionals as well as people having secretarial occupations. The results reflect the multifaceted nature of translator occupation. However, the image implied by each classification is, with a few exceptions, one-sided and incomplete, bringing to the fore certain types of translation work and leaving others in the shadows.
