Abstract

Plastic optical fibers (POF) modified with a triblock polyion complex multiplier (S 10M 49S 10/ 1) were prepared. The optical signals drastically varied at the temperature of the phase transition of the bilayer membrane, which resulted from variation of the refractive index of the membrane matrices as a cladding of POF. The optical signal changes were also caused by conformational change of the poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) segment with pH and by complexation of the PMAA segment with Cu 2+. Such a responsiveness of the optical signal by varying pH and by alternate addition of Cu 2+ and EDTA was reversible.
