Abstract

ABSTRACT This essay is an autoethnographic analysis of AfriGeneas.com and Africanancestry.com, two African-American genealogical websites that represent the poles of a spectrum ranging from resource sites to DNA testing sites. I argue the actions at these sites reveal a transatlantic nostalgia stimulated through structural, visual, and rhetorical appeals. I read my own genetic testing and site participation alongside theories of critical genealogy and performance genealogy to examine the black body as enmeshed in contradictory postcolonial identifications with Africa. I offer critical nostalgia as a method for historical engagement in the performance and analysis of memory practices.
