Abstract

Vietnam is a relative new comer to international tourism and exhibits considerable scope for tourism development. This paper comments on the potential for Vietnam's already significant domestic commercial sex industry to be exploited as a source for the international sex tourism industry in a manner reminiscent of Thailand and the Philippines. Should this situation eventuate there is a possibility that Vietnam will develop a reputation as a sex tourism destination overshadowing other potential market sectors including the family market. A further danger may arise if the authorities fail to take measures to ensure that sex workers practice safe sex practices resulting in foreign visitors contracting HIV/ AIDS. If this were to occur on a large scale the ensuing adverse publicity may damage the nation's tourism industry.
