Abstract

Toulouse, 1947-1971 : national political scenery and the local town hall. — From 1947 to 1971 the municipality of Toulouse remained in the hands of a centrist majority with a socialist mayor : it excluded the communists but cooperated with the right. This was the local expression of a national policy inaugurated in 1947 when the communists where excluded from the government. This union was wrecked when the links between the socialist SFIO and the gaullists were broken in 1965. In 1968 the centrist entente was broken to pieces ; but the new leftist union was defected in 1971 by a right wing coalition. Toulouse has recently been divided into three municipal constituencies which could prove an obstacle for the leftist union to come back in the town hall, which is locally known as the Capitole.
