Abstract
Genetic engineering is a field which explores the possibility of modification or manipulation of genetic materials using various techniques and technologies. Broadly speaking, hybridisation, gene isolation and recombination, fall in this field. The most recent milestone development in this area would be CRISPR technology, which harnesses a component of the bacterial immune system. To elaborate, CRISPR acts as a precise molecular scissors to cut target sequences, thus allowing gene modification to take place. In the progression and advancement of this field, society has been carefully observing its consequences and impact. The utilisation of this technology has raised concerns such as the unknown detrimental impact of genetically modified food sources. On the other hand, the benefit of genetic engineering is self-evident. This article explores the various impacts of genetic engineering and concludes that the advantages of genetic engineering are overshadowed by its many benefits.
