Abstract
ABSTRACT This article highlights the ways in which the operatic boosterism of Chicago’s Fortnightly clubwomen constituted a web of social and organizational relationships that extended beyond official club activities. Using the club’s archived records as well as extant papers of select members, it makes a case for recognizing the local and national efforts undertaken by these clubwomen as examples of individual agency and organizational leadership. The Fortnightly clubwomen involved in this article, as well as their colleagues from adjacent women’s organizations, cultivated an environment in which they staked claims to their cultural interests, magnifying the social influence of women’s operatic advocacy.
