Abstract

Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of health burden around the world and in Vietnam. Malnutrition is usual comorbidity that heavily affects patients’ condition as well as their treatment effectiveness. Conducted in the lung cancer inpatients of the National Cancer Hospital in 2020, our research features two main objectives: (1) to describe the prevalence of nutritional status in the study population and (2) to explore the relationship between malnutrition and related factors. Results show that 67,9% of the patients have normal nutritional conditions. According to PG-SGA classification, the rates of patients with type A, type B and type C nutritional statuses are 61,1%, 21,5% and 17,4% respectively. The two factors “adequate perception” and “received nutrition advice between 24 to 48 hours after hospitalization” are the protective factors (OR=0,43 and OR=0,41 respectively), and the factor “family support in food preparation” is the risk factor to nutritional deficiency in lung cancer patients. It is necessary to strengthen the nutritional care for patients, especially in making sure that patients are given the required amount of nutrients and energy, and to reinforce nutritional knowledge for patients and their caretakers. Keywords: Lung cancer, nutrition, PG-SGA.
