Abstract

In 1882, Professor Edwin Lewis delivered, in Arabic, a speech at the Syrian Protestant College in Beirut entitled Knowledge, Science, and Wisdom, in which he defended the scientific method and mentioned the example of Charles Darwin and his theory. The speech brought on his expulsion from his post, and the students began shortly after the first student strike in the Arab world. This article analyzes these events in the framework of the creation of the public debate and the stress on the individuation process, two main features that characterized the Nahda culture.
